Shipping: Trade: 90% of global trade is waterborne 85% of EU external trade and more than 40% of intra-EU trade is waterborne 40% of the global fleet is European owned Economy: Annual turnover of shipbuilding and marine equipment around €72bn 95% of Large Passenger ships are built in Europe 48% of Marine Equipment is European 500,000 employees Advanced products Trade: 90% of global trade is waterborne 85% of EU external trade and more than 40% of intra-EU trade is waterborne 40% of the global fleet is European owned Economy: Annual turnover shipbuilding and marine equipment around €72bn 95% of Large Passenger ships are built in Europe 48% of Marine Equipment is European 500,000 employees Advanced products

Environmental Impact: NOx Most CO2 efficient per ton km SOx PMs BUT: 2.5% of global CO2 & Major contributor to: SOx NOx PMs Disruption of marine life and habitats: On average, shipping is the most CO2 efficient mode of transport per ton km transported BUT Global CO2 emissions at 2.5% are similar to aircraft Accounting for more SOx emissions than any other transport mode A major contributor to NOx and Particulates Disruption of marine life and habitats: marine noise vessel discharges (sewage, grey water, ballast water, oil spills, bilge water, antifouling compounds, solid waste) invassive species wildlife collisions marine protected areas preservation of coral reefs and related ecosystems

Waterborne Policy Ambition Competitive, Technology lead, novel concepts, better manufacturing, new materials, leading design, connected, automated, competitive with road transport (EU Transport white paper; 2030 30% and 2050 50% of road freight more than 300km by water or rail ), integrated logistics, inland navigation, life cycle cost …. Clean, Goal of zero emission; Electric, fuel cell, battery, wind, shore based auxiliary power and charging. Improved; more efficient, reduced NOX, SOX, PM & CO2, alternate fuels, LNG, efficient, scrubbers, hydrodynamics, LNG, clean fuel. Low impact; ballast water, antifouling, port discharge ... Safe, Damage stability, management for stability in accidents, safe evacuation, collision avoidance, human factors, damage resistant, automation, fire, decision support, better regulation, goal/risk based design….

Vision Vision: Waterborne Clean zero emmission ships. Coastal and inland water transport is preferable to road. Europe builds competitive, advanced ships and advanced marine equipment which has the highest added value and supports EU jobs Safe, particularly for passenger ships
