Intercultural Communication Chapter 9: How Can We Succeed in Our Intercultural Travels?

Hierarchy of Human Needs Maslow’s model in order of need fulfillment Physical needs Safety and protection Belonging and social interaction Achievements and contributions to society Self-actualization

Acculturation The process of becoming communicatively competent in a culture in which we have not been raised. What cultures have you been enculturated into? Ethnic? Religious? Sports? Music? Military? What was the process like for you? How did communication come into play?

Acculturation vs. Assimilation Acculturation is not assimilation. Assimilation often connotes the idea that a newcomer must adjust and adapt and become absorbed into the dominant local culture at the expense of losing his/her original culture, language, and communication practices.

The U-curve Model Four Stages Honeymoon: initial exhilaration at experiencing new culture Crisis: initial excitement wears off and challenges set in Recovery: weathering the storms Adjustment: adjusting to the new culture

Culture Shock A feeling of disorientation and discouragement due to the buildup of stress and unmet expectations that one experiences when subjected to an unfamiliar culture or way of life.
