Chinese Lanterns Medium: Clay Elements: Form and Space Principles: Balance, Pattern, Unity

History & Use Developed in Ancient China during the Tang Dynasty, 7th century. Chinese lanterns became a symbol of hope and good wishes. They provided the people with electricity and to decorate their homes. Features: The most common are red and oval shape. Today the Chinese lantern is widely used in festivals, especially in Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and Lantern Festival.

Chinese Lantern Project Draw four thumbnail sketches of a Chinese Lantern. Create the pinch pot, slab, or cylinder depending on the shape of your lantern. Lid is optional. Top of lantern can be open. May include a thick wire. Score, slip, and smudge together. With potter’s needle, cut out designs to show negative space. Smooth out for bone dry stage. Bisque fire. Glaze lantern.
