PEA pilot project in Ignalina region Warm water all week Speaker: Ričardas Trimonis Ignalina district municipality administration

Heating supply in Ignalina area Heat supply is delegated to the municipality which is responsible for heat and hot water supply to residents, institutions and other customers. Central heat and hot water is supplied by UAB “Ignalinos šilumos tinklai”. When Lithuania regained its independence, all manufacturers used non-local fuels for heating: oil, heating oil, coal, peat. Thanks to the mayor Bronis Rope initiative since year 1995 modernization of heating systems started switching to RES. Instead of non-local fossil fuels municipality started to use local, natural non- polluting fuel - firewood.

Dūkštas situation There are about 1 thousand inhabitants in the city. The heat is supplied centrally to 13 objects – private apartment houses and public institutions from biomass fired boiler house. There are about 180 people who depend on central heating system. Problem - during summer period users have hot water only at weekends. Users who want to use hot water every day, have to install electric preheaters and use expensive electricity.

Dūkštas boiler house Fuel – firewood Capacity – 1 MW

The solution found The solution was found in the frames of PEA project. We plan to install vacuum solar collectors on the roof of the boiler house.

Possibilities of solar power use Feasibility analysis for installation of solar collectors for heat production was made. Analysis results are: Solar radiation in Lithuania is about 1100-1200 W/m2 per year, when in the southern European countries solar radiation is about 1800 W/m2. Technology analysis showed that investment should be made to vacuum solar collectors that have the highest efficiency. Project boundaries are limited by a budget also roof in Dūkštas boiler house. These two criteria determined possible solar collectors area which is calculated to be around 130 square meters; annual production from this system will be around 72 MWh, total investments around 100.000 Euro. All heat produced by solar collectors will be used for centralized hot water supply. 13 percent of all heat demand (for hot water supply) will be produced by solar collector, the rest as in present situation will be produced by biomass boilers.

The results planned People will have hot water all week. The additional 72 MWh per year will be produced from solar power. The expected reduction of CO is 160 kg per year. We will need 50 sq. meters of wood less after installing the collectors (per year). Today we will know the supplier – tender procedures end. The planned investment is 100 000 EUR. About 13 percent of total energy needed will be produced from sustainable energy source – solar power. It will be the first investment in the area of Ignalina of this kind.

The progress Feasibility study was prepared Public procurement procedures end at 4th February – today  It is expected to finish work till the end of May in order to use solar power this summer already.
