Bible Study: Matt 1 and Luke 1,2

Bible Study: Matt 1 and Luke 1,2 1. Joseph 2. Jesus 3. He will save His people from their sins 4. Joseph 5. Because Joseph was heir to the throne of David. By naming the child he acknowledged the child as his firstborn, and next heir to the throne of David.

Bible Study: Matt 1 and Luke 1,2 6. Mary 7. Gabriel Hero of God 8. Jesus 9. On the eighth day 10. It does not say who did it, just that it was done as the angel had instructed.

 Greek and Hebrew The Old Testament is written (mainly) in Hebrew. The New Testament is written in Greek. Hebrew and Greek names don’t always quite match. Just like Dutch and English ones: Klaas becomes Clarence or Claude, Jantje becomes Jean, Geeske becomes Grace, and Wim becomes Bill. Jesus is a Greek name. It was commonly used for boys with the Hebrew name Joshua (Yeshuah).

Jesus = Joshua (kind of) Etymology  Interestingly, both the names Jesus and Joshua come from the Greek and Hebrew words for “to save”. Greek: “to save” is soozein Hebrew: “to save” is yasha. Yeshuah literally means “Yah(weh) will save” For, in Greek, the name does not have “Yah” in it. Jesus = Joshua (kind of)

Jesus’ task What had the angel said about what Jesus would do? What impression would this have given the Jews? He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:32-33

Jesus’ task  Joshua had been the man by whom God had brought Israel into Canaan. David had been the man by whom God had given Israel the complete promised land. Jesus had the same name as Joshua and was heir to the throne of David. Many Jews figured Jesus would be the one to deliver them from the Romans.

 Jesus’ task But the angel had also said: Jesus would save people from sin and the devil. And He would do it Himself. (Mind you, Jesus is Yahweh) She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

Don’t tell them...  Jesus often forbade people who realized that He was the Messiah from God to tell this. Why did He do that? (discuss) Jesus did not want people to see Him as the wrong type of Messiah. He had not come to deliver the Jews from the Romans, but to deliver mankind from sin and Satan!

Heidelberg Catechism 29. Q. Why is the Son of God called Jesus, that is, Saviour? A. Because He saves us from all our sins, and because salvation is not to be sought or found in anyone else.

Would you call your child Jesus?  Many Roman Catholic people - especially in the Americas - are called Jesus. Mind you, English people prefer to pronounce it the Spanish way: Hesou. Would you call your child Jesus? Generally, Christians don’t. For Jesus is the only one who can save people from their sins. Who would want their child to have this name? Many Catholics do, because they figure Jesus will be kinder to people who have His (or Mary’s) name.

 What about Mary? The Roman Catholic Church also venerates Mary. “The Church’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian Worship.”(Catholic Catechism) Concerning her the Catholic Catechism teaches “Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to brings us the gifts of eternal salvation.” As Protestants we hold that Mary was a sinful human being, and thus cannot save, either herself, or others.

Heidelberg Catechism 30. Q. Do those who seek their salvation or well-being in saints, in themselves, or anywhere else, also believe in the only Saviour Jesus? A. No. Though they boast of Him in words, they in fact deny the only Saviour Jesus. For one of two things must be true: either Jesus is not a complete Saviour, or those who by true faith accept this Saviour must find in Him all that is necessary for their salvation.
