Working together… For this session, I am asking that you practice strategies; That you only complete the questions that I assign; That you let me guide you through getting to know the test. One of the strategies for doing well, is to KNOW the test. So, our work is designed to get to know the test.

Think about how you worked the passage? Did you read the passage or skim, then answer the questions? Did you look at the questions, then the passage? How may questions could you answer by reading the first column? Why are there numbers next to the passage? How many questions are given for this passage? What type of passage is this? Which questions have words in italics? Do you know and understand all the terms given in #4? Answer to #2 is found in the second column.

You need to READ the Reading Passage Seems that reading the questions first (in this section) may take more time, than reading the passage first- followed by completing the questions. You need to READ the Reading Passage Read the passage first, then do the questions. Try to finish reading within 3 minutes and finish answering questions in 5 minutes. Reading passages should take 8.75 minutes each. Look at the time: 35 minutes ÷ 4 passages = 8.75 35 minutes – 5 min warning ÷ 4 passages = 7.5 If you spend 3 min to read, you’ll have 4.5 minutes to answer questions + the 5 min warning.
Work the Test Time Saver: Read ALL the answer choices, eliminating the distractors – incorrect answers. Answer what you can without looking back. Answer those that refer to a line (25% of questions are item specific). Terms in italics – find meaning in lines. You may find one passage easier to read. Decide in what order you will read the passages; you may feel one passage is an easier read then another . BUT be careful to mark answers in correct area. Write notes in the booklet. Some people like to quickly preview the questions or passages. I Prose Fiction II Social Science III Humanities IV Natural Science Consider that some people never get to the last passage, but there are easy questions in each passage AND – you may find IV a quicker read.
Get your pencils ready…. Practice Reading Time The purpose of this practice is to determine how far you can read in 3 minutes or 5 minutes. You need to know so that you are able to plan your reading and how to best use the 5 minute warning. I will announce when 3 minutes and 5 minutes have passed. Put a mark in your passage.
