Let’s Talk About Abortion... An Animated Film For Young People Leanne Rockingham Network Officer, Healthy Respect

Research & Context This film was made in response to the findings from the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships study, “Young People’s views and knowledge about abortion.” The main themes it seeks to address are: The significant gaps in young people’s knowledge of basic information on the where, when and how and their request to be given this information.

Research & Context (cont.) Misinformation on minimum age, parental consent, what actually happens at the clinic and other themes. The moral debates between peers around rights, responsibilities, choice and particular references to when it is ‘acceptable’ to have an abortion and challenging some of the gender stereotypes brought to light by the research. Young men expressing a view that they felt excluded in the process.

Commissioning the film The film was commissioned with a budget of £12k after a competitive tendering process. It was awarded to a company who really believed in the aims of the work. We knew we wanted to work in the medium of animation, but getting the tone of the script, the look and feel of the film right was a complex process. We really wanted to make a quality product which was respectful of young people and their right to have this information.

Commissioning the film We went to a lot of effort when making the film to make sure that all NHS Health Boards could make use of the resource. We made sure that the information was generic enough to be transferable and created a factsheet which can be altered to provide more localised information.

Distribution & Promotion We launched the film via our professional networks, social media such as twitter and a direct targeted advertising to young people using a 30 second trailer. This direct advertising campaign will be repeated in May/June. Dona Milne, our Deputy Director of Public Health wrote a blog on the work to reach all Youth Workers across Scotland.

What’s next? All SHARE trainers in Lothian will get to see this at their training and be asked to include it in their delivery to young people We need you all to use this as a resource – download the factsheet and share with young people or use for a session Some SHARE trained teachers have already used this in class – we are delighted with this and the young people’s feedback Inclusion in the new RSHP content for all across Scotland More direct targeted advertising to young people - so we know they see it Linking in with new work and outputs from the strategy to link with other resources looking at all pregnancy choices – including work by Young Scot.
