Age of Exploration “Gazing on such wonderful sights we did not know what to say” A Spanish explorer, on arriving in the Aztec capital in 1519 1. How do you think this explorer might have felt? 2. What might the explorer been looking at? 3. What kinds of things might an explorer of today have the same reaction to?

World Travel and Trade Merchant (noun) a person who makes money by buying and selling goods. Synonym (trader) Kingdom (noun) a country ruled by a king or queen.

Caravan (noun) a group of travelers journeying together.

New Ideas in Europe Lesson 2 Main Idea: New learning spread through Europe, leading to better tools for sailors and explorers. Technology: (noun) the use of scientific knowledge and tools to solve problems. Navigation: (noun) the science of planning and controlling the direction of a ship.

Astrolabe: (noun) an instrument once used by sailors for navigation. Main Idea: Portuguese explorers were the first Europeans to find a sea route to Asia. Astrolabe: (noun) an instrument once used by sailors for navigation. Profit: (noun) money left over after all expenses have been paid. Slavery: (noun) a system in which people could be bought and sold and were forced to work with no pay.

Europeans Arrive in the Americas Lesson 3 Main Idea: Christopher Columbus sailed to the islands of the West Indies trying to reach Asia. Main Idea: Columbus carried new plants and animals to and from the Americas and Europe. Main Idea: Explorers continued to sail to the Americas to search for new routes to Asia. Epidemic- (noun) an outbreak of disease that makes many people sick at once.

Lesson 3 Settlement- (noun) a small community of people in a frontier region. Circumnavigate- (noun) to sail all the way around something.

Conquest of the Americas Lesson 4 Main Idea: Spanish soldiers conquered the Aztecs in present-day Mexico. Spanish Explorers went to the southern parts of the present-day United States looking for gold. Expedition (noun) a journey taken by a group for a definite purpose.

Lesson 4 Conquistador (noun) a Spanish soldier who helped conquer the native civilizations of Central and South America. Empire (noun) territories and groups of people controlled by one government.

New Spain Lesson 5 Main Idea: The Spanish increased the size of New Spain and spread their rule in North America. Main Idea: Spanish settlers and American Indians lived together, but not always peacefully. Colony (noun) a settlement ruled by a distant country. Spanish colony-St. Augustine Florida

Mission (noun) a Christian settlement and religious community. Convert (verb) to force or convince someone to change to another religion.

Hacienda (noun) a plantation or large ranch owned by Spanish colonists. Revolt (noun) a rebellion against a ruler.

Northwest Passage Main Idea: In the 1500’s and 1600’s, explorers looked for a water route through North America to Asia. Main Idea: Conflicts over treasure and religion led to fighting between Spain and England.

Northwest Passage Claim (noun) something declared to belong to someone, especially land. Armada (noun) a fleet of warships Invasion (noun) the entry of an armed force into another country to conquer it.
