SAFETY MEETING THE SAFETY OF YOUR DOOR STARTS WITH YOU. ABESDOOR.CA OVERHEAD DOOR SAFETY MEETING PRESENTED BY [INSERT BUSINESS NAME] ABESDOOR.CA COMPILED BY ABE’S DOOR SERVICE

QUICK FACTS ABOUT OVERHEAD DOOR SAFETY 23.4% of all overhead door injuries happen at work. 59% of all injuries involve someone crushing a joint, finger, or hand. 23.5% of all injuries involve a door falling on someone. In Canada, approximately 1000 people are sent to the hospital each year due to a spring related failure. In the US, approximately 20,000 people are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries related to garage doors each year. Over 85 children have died or suffered a severe brain injury from an automatic door since 1974.

WHY IS OVERHEAD DOOR SAFETY IMPORTANT? Your overhead door is usually the largest piece of moving equipment on your property. Do you know when the last time you had a professional take a look at your door? It’s recommended by door manufacturers that you have your door checked 1 to 2 times per year, depending on usage. Most won't have their door checked until it breaks down or an unfortunate accident occurs. Don’t be that unfortunate accident. Most companies do not have an inspection system in place for their overhead doors. Overhead doors have many moving parts, most of which have a life cycle and are rated for a certain number of up and down operations. Overhead door parts will wear out. They are not intended to be used for the lifetime of your door!

COMMON HAZARDS HUMANS

OBJECTS COMMON HAZARDS BROOM LEFT LEANING AGAINST THE DOOR TRACK GARBAGE CAN LEFT IN THE OPENING

VEHICLES COMMON HAZARDS VEHICLE PARKED IN THE OPENING DOOR CLOSED ON VEHICLE

FORKLIFTS COMMON HAZARDS FORKLIFT APPROACHING FORKLIFT RUNNING DOOR BEFORE OPENED FORKLIFT RUNNING INTO DOOR

ABOUT OUR OVERHEAD DOOR? AREN’T THERE SAFETY MECHANISMS WHY DO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT OUR OVERHEAD DOOR? AREN’T THERE SAFETY MECHANISMS IN PLACE TO PREVENT INJURY? ISN’T THIS SOMEONE ELSE’S JOB?

WHY? LIKE EVERYTHING, YOU’RE PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY. WHY? Safety mechanisms that are in place can malfunction or breakdown. The door is operated by multiple users throughout the day. You don’t know what happened to it last. No one else is aware of the damage. The door is operating in a damaged state. No one else knows what to look for before operating their doors. There was no pre-use inspection performed before use. You could prevent an injury from happening to someone else. SAFETY STARTS WITH YOU!

OKAY, SO WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT DOOR INJURY?

WHY WOULD AN OVERHEAD DOOR BE ANY DIFFERENT? WELL, ASK YOURSELF, WHAT DO YOU DO BEFORE OPERATING ANY PIECE OF HEAVY EQUIPMENT? VEHICLE : PRE-TRIP INSPECTION FORKLIFT : PRE-USE INSPECTION OVERHEAD CRANE : PRE-USE INSPECTION TRAILER : PRE-USE INSPECTION OXY/ACETYLENE TORCH : PRE-USE INSPECTION WHY WOULD AN OVERHEAD DOOR BE ANY DIFFERENT?

THE LOL SYSTEM IS SIMPLE, YET EFFECTIVE. LOOK OBSERVE LISTEN closely at the door. the operation of your door, as it goes up and down. for abnormal sounds.

BENEFITS OF THE LOL DAILY USE CHECKLIST Helps prevent unnecessary downtime in production or daily work activities. Reduces the cost of repairs to your overhead door. Helps fulfill the safety requirements of your safety program. Familiarizes employees about their door system. Promotes safe operation and better practices when using your door. Promotes an all around better safety attitude.

SAMPLE FORM

WHAT KIND OF SAFETY EQUIPMENT COULD WE INSTALL TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF OUR OVERHEAD DOORS?

BOTTOM REVERSING EDGES EQUIPMENT BOTTOM REVERSING EDGES They are usually air actuated, or electronically actuated. When the system is compressed from contacting something under- neath the door, it will send an air pulse or electronic pulse to a switch which will send the door back up. ALWAYS FOUND ON THE LEADING EDGE OF YOUR DOOR.

TYPICALLY FOUND MOUNTED TO THE DOOR TRACKS 6”-18” FROM THE GROUND. EQUIPMENT PHOTO EYES PHOTO EYES ARE USUALLY RETROREFLECTIVE OR THROUGH BEAM. TYPICALLY FOUND MOUNTED TO THE DOOR TRACKS 6”-18” FROM THE GROUND. RETROREFLECTIVE PHOTO EYES : sends out a signal to a reflector which bounces the signal back to the photo eye. When the signal is disrupted, it tells to door to go back up. THROUGH BEAM PHOTO EYES : sends out a signal from the sending unit to receiving unit. It creates an infrared beam. When this beam gets disrupted, the door goes back up.

YOUR DOOR, LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM SECTION (DOOR PANEL) OF YOUR DOOR. FAIL SAFE BOTTOM BRACKETS/ EQUIPMENT ANTI-FALL BOTTOM BRACKETS These brackets have a mechanical brake attached to the door cable so should your door cable break, the break on the bottom bracket will deploy. This will stop your door from free falling should the cables come off or should the cables break. TYPICALLY FOUND AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR DOOR, LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM SECTION (DOOR PANEL) OF YOUR DOOR.

INSTALLED AT THE BOTTOM EQUIPMENT TILT SENSORS INSTALLED AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR OVERHEAD DOOR ON THE BOTTOM PANEL. This will sense if the door goes off level. It will then tell your door to shut down before anything worse can happen.

WARNING LIGHTS EQUIPMENT The function of the warning light is to warn people when the door is in motion or when it is safe to proceed through the door opening. There are a couple different style of lights, but the most prominent ones for overhead doors are: STROBE LIGHTS : usually RED, they will flash while the door is in motion, sometimes they will have an audible sound working with the strobing light. TRAFFIC LIGHTS : can be RED + GREEN, sometimes red, yellow and green. These lights will work like a traffic light, it is safe to proceed on green.

Thank You! CLOSING THANK YOU! ABESDOOR.CA An overhead door is a complex machine with a lot of moving parts. No amount of safety equipment will prevent breakdowns or safety issues if the person using the door does not understand or is unwilling to change their practices in how they operate and maintain their door. This can only be done by changing a person's attitude towards their door and educating them in the proper use and maintenance of their overhead door. This will prevent downtime, will prevent safety issues, and will prevent costly repairs. ABESDOOR.CA THANK YOU!
