Introduction

What is a nudge? Nudge is a concept which argues that positive reinforcement and indirect suggestions to try to achieve non-forced compliance can influence the motives and decision making of groups and individuals, at least as effectively as direct instruction or enforcement.

Objectives Mission: Reducing food wasting habits Reduce food wasted by students in buffet style cafeterias Nudging students to be more mindful of how much they perceive they will eat and how much they actually eat

Strategy: Choice Architecture Pilot program in Hayden Hall Introduce: Smaller plates and serving spoons Smaller nozzles for condiment dispensers and sugar shakers Mirror above trash can Weighing scale under trash can with display above

Smaller Plates and Serving Spoons Plate size reduction from 24 to 21 cm. Reduced food waste by 19.5% -Center for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo

Condiments When using the dispenser we waste on average… 0.61 oz./ pump 1.25 oz.=1 pump

Sugar Shakers

Mirrors and Waste Scales

Implementation 1) Gather historical waste data on target dining halls from John @ Office of Sustainability 2) Work with Office of Dining Services to discuss strategy logistics 3) Rollout final strategy 4) Gather progressive data (time series) & surveys 5) Maintain Control for mirrors and weighing scale effectiveness

Financial Budget

Challenges Push back from Office of Dining Services Working with cafeteria workers Ongoing data collection - working with Office of Sustainability Negative feedback from students

Conclusion Nudging people to be mindful about food waste habits If successful, it is scalable for other cafeterias and schools Hold campus wide competition like “Un-plugged”
