Introduction and the role of ISPT ZERO BRINE Introduction and the role of ISPT

ZERO BRINE Objective To recover the minerals from industrial saline impaired effluents (brines) while eliminating wastewater discharge and minimising environmental impact. Duration: June 2016 – May 2021 Project Coordination: TU Delft No partners: 22 Total budget: € 11.3 M Budget H2020: € 9.9 M ISPT Budget: € 0.4 M

Scope Large scale demonstration in the Energy Port and Petrochemical cluster of Rotterdam Port (Nethrelands) treating part of the brine effluents generated by one process industry using the waste heat from neighbouring factories Three large-scale pilot plants in other process industries: Mining Industry (Poland) Textile (Turkey) Chemical (Spain) Brine excelence center Optimization of innovative technologies, development of technology library, integration into a common platform. Online Brine platform Allowing on machmaking of potential Industrial customers with providers of the thechnological solutions.

Concept of ZERO BRINE proposal and TRL

WP Structure ISPT betrokken ISPT betrokken ISPT in lead

WP5 - Brine excellence center ISPT NOT invloed, but important connection to WP6 Modifications (upgrade) tof pilot brine treatment systems developed in previous EU projects Creating Brine Excellence Centers in NL, ES, IT, PL and Greece that will serve as full equipped facilities where companies will be able to test the eqipment with their real wastewater. Consist of sollution owed by the partners – on the bench – pilot scale. Development of Brine Excellence centers Development of a plan for the shared use of the BEC’s equipmeent by the project partners Development of technology libraries (software tools)/ Integration into a common platform

WP6 – Online Brine Platform ISPT is the leader Objective To develop an Online Brine Platform that will result in: increased customer traction for the Brine Consortium of technology suppliers providing effective brine treatment solutions to process industries (problem owners) link problem owners to end-users, promoting resource efficiency and circular economy concepts as well as facilitate and ensure the extensive knowledge exchange and dialogue between key stakeholders.

WP6 – Online Brine Platform ISPT is the leader Work to do Task 6.1. Development of Online Brine Platform tool (lead by NTUA) Task 6.2 Integration, validation and demonstration of the tools for the case of Netherlands (lead by ISPT) The tool demonstrated for the case of Rotterdam Rijnmond The tool demonstrated to 5 industrial clusters in the Netherlands: Delfzijl, Amsterdam, Chemelot, Zeeland, Emmen → 5 workshops? ISPT responsible for mapping and contacting these industries. Complete registration of the brine effluent producers, as well as the end-markets expected for the case of the Netherlands. Software tool developed in WP5 used for simulation of possible treatment trains can be delivered to the problem owners, providing also concrete estimations of mass and energy balances, as well as critical OPEX and CAPEX figures. At least two case studies that will be examined through the Online Brine Platform will be further investigated through the use of the Brine Excellence Center (WP5) to replicate the project results to other process industries as well (WP8).

Application of the Online Brine Platform, correlation between brine stream providers, solution providers and practitioners

WP10 ISPT in lead of Subtask 10. 6 WP10 ISPT in lead of Subtask 10.6.2: Training Sessions and social acceptance workshops To organise (green – organisation by ISPT, black – coordination by ISPT): 2 training sessions (both 50 participants): for the managing authorities of the six industrial clusters in NL in order to promote capacity building, the concept of Industrial Symbiosis and support by the platform for the personnel of companies that are expected to be involved in the brine symbiotic chain and use the platorm for this purpose Questionnaire (20 persons) to provide te feedback on the system performance 5 training sessions in 5 countries: Spain (organisation by CTM) )- targed group – process industries Poland (organisation by POLSL) - targed group – process industries Turkey (organisation TUBITAK)- targed group – process industries Italy (organisation UNIPA) – capacity building, dissimination, promote OBP Greece (organisation by NTUA) – capacity building, dissimination, promote OBP 2 Social acceptance workshops - organized by TU DELFT in collaboration with ISPT and REVOLVE
