AIDA WP8.4 Qualification of components and common database Steve Robertson, Simon Canfer

Introduction AIDA Work Package 8.4, Qualification of materials and common database, will make a database available to the LHC community that contains links to results of relevant irradiated materials and components. In parallel the labs involved in WP8.4 are testing a range of materials, components and sensors in support of LHC upgrades. These are STFC, INFN Perugia, INFN Milano and associate member ETH Zurich.

Progress Milestone 32, Initial Results, delivered INFN-Mi is testing electronic components and devices such as ADCs, MUX etc, both commercial and custom devices developed by CERN or CERNs collaborators. INFN-Pg is testing silicon pixel sensors, especially active pixel sensors (APS). The program is to characterize custom prototype APS detectors, fabricated in different technologies (180,130, 90nm), and also commercial detectors, with varying epitaxial layer thickness: See Mauro’s presentation ETHZ has developed test procedures and has performed and published irradiation tests of components that can be considered as inorganic scintillators for calorimetry. Tested materials were: crystalline CeF3, Ce:LYSO, Ce:YSO, scintillating Ce:YAG, Ce:LuAG and Ce:LuYAG ceramics under irradiation by 24 GeV/c protons. ETHZ has also investigated the damage mechanism in crystalline PbWO4 and has shown it is due to fission tracks. STFC-RAL have focused on composite matrix materials. Laminates in a range of chemistries have been produced and irradiated. Less radiation hard, but highly flexible epoxies have been tested for use in detectors.

AIDA Common Database The “Imhotep” Database is now live: http://tinyurl.com/aidaimhotep Or http://imhotep.rl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/imhquery.pl The database has been written by Lesley Wright at RAL using an open-source solution, LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl).

Imhotep Third Dynasty (~2650-2600BC) polymath. “Chancellor of the King of Egypt, Doctor, First in line after the King of Upper Egypt, Administrator of the Great Palace, Hereditary nobleman, High Priest of Heliopolis, Builder, Chief Carpenter, Chief Sculptor, and Maker of Vases in Chief.” Third Dynasty (~2650-2600BC) polymath. Architect of the Pyramid of Djoser (Step Pyramid) Possible author of the “Edwin Smith Papyrus”: a medical treatise. © Dr N. Hawkins © 1997; AISA, Archivo Iconográfico, Barcelona, España

Link to data entry page The database Welcome page and Query page Search for data; scope is either “Active material”- detector components – or “Passive material” such as support structure materials, adhesives

Results of search for “passive materials” Results can be drilled down Results can be downoaded as CSV

Data entry 1 : blue symbols are compulsory NOTE when data has been submitted it will take a minimum of 24 hours for the data to be visible on the public server. The data manager checks the data for quality.

Data entry 2: PDFs can be uploaded, or a Reference DOI given.

Data entry 3

Database hardware Very robust system using 4 servers: All data entry will be done on Lutra (backed up by Aonyx), and then exported nightly across the firewall to Tarka (backed up by Mijbil) on which the query system will run. Aonyx will be in a different building to Lutra (probably in the ATLAS centre at RAL). The urls can be swapped between the pairs of machines to allow for power outages, patching and other similar occurrences; this process will be invisible to users.

Issues Experience has shown that Firefox is the best browser for accessing the DB there is an issue with IE and the “back” button which is being investigated Please report any issues using the “contact us” button

Please submit your data http://tinyurl.com/aidaimhotep Or http://imhotep.rl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/imhquery.pl

Rad-hard composites Applications: Detector support structures (e.g. Carbon-fibre reinforced polymers in ATLAS trackers) High field magnets, LHC machine upgrade (electrical insulation and structural) The matrix material often dictates the lifetime of these components in a radiation environment

Testing of matrix materials for high field magnets Composites with S-glass fibre Range of polymers exposed to 50MGy, 6MeV photons Electrical breakdown and tensile tests, thermal conductivity tests are planned Example tensile results: Laminates made at RAL S-glass fibre at 45 degrees to tensile axis Irradiated at Zwierk with an electron gun at 77K nominally Tested at 77K in LN2 bath Total of 4 chemistries: Mix 71A, Anhydride “918”, TGPAP+DETD, CE-Epoxy. Electrical tests showed good retention of electrical breakdown for them all. Almost complete loss of tensile properties: Epoxy with aliphatic hardener Tensile strength largely maintained: Cyanate ester + epoxy mix
