Your Role This Year ◦Check your child’s planner every night. ◦ Review the contents of your child’s homework folder folder every night. ◦ Study with your child. ◦Review all contents of the Wednesday Work bag. ◦ Read with and to your child.

Our Third Grade Day ◦ Pledge & morning work ◦ Math ◦ ELA ◦ Lunch/Recess ◦ ELA ( literacy) ◦ Social Studies / Science/Writing

Lunch and Recess Lunch and Recess- 11:30 – 12:15

Report Card Grades will be given for main subject areas: Math, ELA, Science, and Social Studies. Spelling, grammar, and writing are weighted subcategories of ELA.( Comprehension – 50%, Spelling 10% Writing – 25%, Grammar – 15%) Sub skills are graded as Require Support ( RS); Meeting Standard ( MS); and Exceeding Standard ( ES).

What Does the Report Card Look Like? The report card for grades 3,4, and 5 are aligned.

Math Curriculum Math – Place Value, Addition, Multiplication & Division, Subtraction, Fractions, Time, Graphs, Geometry , Measurement

Math Instruction Each unit is pretested For most units, children are assigned to Mrs. Reger or Mrs. Stock for math instruction, based on their pretest results. Application and problem solving are the main emphasis of the skills taught. Fact mastery is critical – please practice the basic facts ( addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) with your child.

ELA – English Language Arts Students will read Story Town stories, reading passages from other resources, and at times, novels. Tests will be based on cold reads and not the story from the reading book. Comprehension will be assessed through quizzes and biweekly tests. Vocabulary will be tested for every story.

Written Responses on Reading Tests Responses are completed with the teacher for the first nine weeks. Within the response, we will be grading for: Restate the question as a topic sentence Answer the question Cite evidence from the passage or story Explain how you know the evidence supports the answer Sentence to conclude the paragraph

SPELLING Lists are aligned with StoryTown program Three review or enrichment words are given with each list Weekly dictation is given – one point per sentence. Students may qualify for a challenge spelling list based on pre test results.

Writing Instruction The goal is to develop writing skills through a combination of skill instruction and creative writing. Students will learn three types of writing: informative, opinion, and narrative

Science and Social Studies Units rotate: one Science, then one Social Studies Formal tests are given – your child will need help studying!!!

Cursive Taught throughout the year Students will be required to use it for specific assignments the last nine weeks.

Homework Expectation is that the homework is completed by the due date Always recorded in your child’s planner Expectation is that the homework is completed by the due date Your child may need your guidance.

Birthdays If possible, notify me at least 3 days in advance if you plan to send in a treat Please remember to send napkins and plates Please- no cookie cakes – unless they are precut

Looking forward to a successful year!
