Indian Institute of Astrophysics http://www.iiap.res.in/ Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) traces its history from the creation of an Observatory by East India Company in Madras in 1786 which was later shifted to Kodaikanal in 1887 and today known as Kodaikanal Solar Observatory of IIA. The Observatory houses over 100 yrs of data on the Sun. In continuation of a small scale night time astronomy facility started at Kodaikanal, a new observatory was started at Kavalur in Tamilnadu for stellar spectroscopy and photometry. The site, chosen after extensive astronomical survey is now home of many optical telescopes and is known as Vainu Bappu Observatory. The Astrophysical Observatory was converted in 1971 into an autonomous research institute wholly financed by the Government of India, and known as the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, headquartered in Bangalore with facilities in optics, electronics and data analysis to support all activities of the observatories.
