Facility and Event Management Course Projects Bill Nowlan EdD Lasell College bnowlan@lasell.edu

Intro I would like to present and discuss five projects that I utilize within courses for Sport Facility and Event Management at both the undergraduate and Master’s level. These projects attempt to connect the classroom to actual hands-on learning projects to allow students to apply the knowledge being presented in the classroom with real-life scenarios. The students are able to see an actual application of theories and principles discussed in the classroom to see and understand why it is important to understand this material.

COSMA Educational Innovation Professional Components Programs should provide an environment that encourages and recognizes innovation and creativity in the education of sport management students Professional Components Functions of Sport Management Sport Operations Includes event and facility/venue operations including strategic planning, emergency management, ticketing, concessions, crowd management, and parking

Learning Objectives 1) Obtain a further understanding of the process of building a sports facility. 2) Understand the principles of planning a facility. 3) Analyze the various components that need to be considered when choosing a sport facility site. 4) Appreciate the elements involved in the construction process. 5) Obtain a better understanding of the various components necessary for putting on a successful athletic event. 6) Obtain a better knowledge of the design, construction and amenities of a successful athletic facility.

5 Projects 1) Venue Oral Presentation 2) Event Management Evaluation 3) Facility Design Project 4) Event Design Project 5) Sport Venue Evaluation Project

Sport Venue Evaluation Project Each student will research a major sport venue and evaluate the design, construction, and amenities of the facility. Appropriate facilities include those for colleges and universities, professional sport facilities (even international), and/or community or state recreational facilities. You must submit the venue that you will be researching in Module 2 and the full project in Module 7. If too many people choose a particular facility they will be told that they must choose another facility, with this based upon the time at which the venue choice was submitted.   Facility Evaluations should include the following: A detailed list of the events that occur at the facility A detailed inventory of the facility (activity areas, storage, locker rooms, etc) A floor plan of the facility including arrangements for a variety of events A detailed inventory of seating levels and luxury suites, including seating capacity for each type of seating and yearly attendance figures Individual game and season ticket prices for each seating area A listing of concession areas in the facility and what types of food are sold during events Describe the process of obtaining the naming rights for the facility including how much the facility is receiving for this right. A history of how the facility was financed and built, and the construction time to complete it. A list of any renovations that have occurred within the facility since it opened. The major advertisers with signage in the facility Assignment Requirements Submit the venue you will be researching in Module 2. Each of these elements should be a subsection of the assignment. Designate them in bold face print or on a new page for each Assignment should be a minimum of 5 pages up to whatever it takes you to complete the assignment thoroughly This project should be double-spaced and written in proper APA format Submit your project to the drop box in Moodle with Module 7 on Sunday October 22, 2017

Event Design Project EVENT COURSE PROJECT   You and your partner will be working together to create a new sports event of your choice, that will host at least 5000 people. You will decide as a team which components of the project each member of the team will be responsible for. You will be required to complete the necessary research to help you formulate your plan for your event. Depending upon the type of event you choose to create, you should research similar types of events, and specifically the various components that you will be working on. Remember to use the critical steps of Assess, Plan, Manage, and Control. This project will be the culmination of the work that we do during the semester, along with the independent research and work that you will complete. Since this project is taking the place of a final exam, it accounts for a significant portion of your final grade. Consequently, I expect a significant amount of time and energy to be put towards this project. The course will also end with all groups giving a 5 – 10 minute presentation to the class about your facility. Appropriate power point, poster, or other audio-visual aids will be an important component of this presentation. Each member of the group will be responsible for presenting the information about the various components of the project that they were individually responsible for. DUE DATE: WEDNESDAY JANUARY 31, 2018 Team name Team members Individual Responsibilities FINAL PROJECT DUE DATE: PP: Wednesday April 25 Paper: Monday April 30 Each section of this project should contain a written explanation with proper APA citing of the sources of the information you researched pertaining to each individual component. The written project that will be handed in should also contain a bibliography with all of your sources of information. Also any diagrams or drawings should be included to help to explain each component of the event. The final project should contain: Be sure to answer the following questions: Where will the event take place? What type of event is it? Who is participating in the event?
