Abstract Expressionism Mid 1940s – early 1960s The abstract expressionists were inspired by the surrealists Abstract expressionism was the first art that was considered properly American Abstract expressionism was made up of two general groups: the action painters; and the colour field painters Abstract Expressionism

“To us, art is an adventure into an unknown world of the imagination which is fancy-free and violently opposed to common sense. There is no such thing as a good painting about nothing. We assert that the subject is critical.”  - Gottlieb and Rothko, with the assistance of Newman, 1943

Prominent artists in abstract expressionism: Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Clyfford Still, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky, Phillip Guston, Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, William Baziotes, Adolph Gottlieb, Richard Pousette-Dart and David Smith.
