Preparing for College Now Underclassmen Presentation

Plan your future with the YOU in mind Ask yourself- What kind of person am I? What do I enjoy doing? What don’t I enjoy doing? What are my favorite subjects? What am I good at? What things are most important to me? What kind of career do I want to pursue based on who I am? What major do I need get in order to have this career? What schools have this major? Which school is the best fit for me (in terms of budget, social life, distance from home and size?)

What Career Should you have? First consider what you like to do (Take career assessment) Secondly, consider what lifestyle you would like to have (where you live, how much money you make, if you have a family, ect) Then think about how much time and money you are willing to put into a career Lastly, consider the outlook for that job. Is there suppose to be more or less jobs available once you would graduate? Gave a 15 minute career assessment and talked about the student’s results.

Career Comparison Nurse Engineer BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) takes at least four years to complete Rigorous Academics Focus on health sciences Average income of $56,730 in Tennessee At the least a Bachelors degree is needed (4 years) Rigorous Academics Focuses on math and science Average income of $85,900 Had students guess to how many years of school they need, what kind of classes are needed and the average income of each job.

Career Comparison Welder Lawyer 12 month program at full time Hands on learning Average income of $37,950 8 years in school (bachelors degree and law school) Focus on political and social sciences Average income of $83,709

Grades Matter Now The grades you make now affect your overall GPA. Trying in your classes now means more opportunities and scholarships later. Better grades are the best and easiest way to get money for college!

Start thinking about the ACT The amount of money that you get for school is directly related to your test scores. Making the benchmarks are important to what classes you have to take in college. The ACT effects what colleges will accept you. There are free practice tests and workbooks available.

Money speaks- the difference GPA & ACT Makes ETSU Scholarships Presidential-$5000/AY 3.9- GPA, 30- ACT Provost-$4000/AY 3.5-GPA, 27-ACT Deans-$3000/AY 3.5- GPA, 26- ACT Faculty $2000/AY 3.5-GPA, 25- ACT Faculty-$2000/AY 4.0-GPA, 22- ACT

But grades are not everything… Colleges also look at: Recommendation letters Volunteer experience Leadership skills Hobbies and interests Type of Academic program Essay writing abilities And more… Before I clicked to show the answers I played the GPA game with the students.

Choosing the right school for you Types of schools Questions to ask Technical School- TCAT Community College- Walters State Public School- University of Tennessee Private School- Tusculum What kind of degrees do these schools offer? How long do the programs take? How much does each school cost per year? What kind of scholarship and grants are offered at that school?

You are not alone If you have questions about college, majors or a certain career- ASK! Your teachers, counselors and staff are all here to help you be successful in the future.
