Do Now What do you think of when you think of polar bears? You probably imagine them in a snow-covered setting. Why don’t polar bears live in the desert?
If you could live in any biome, which one would it be and why?
Terrestrial Biomes Overview.
What are biomes? Biomes are regions of the world with similar climate, animals, and plants.
Biomes of the World Classified by: 1) the animals that live there 2) the plants that grow there 3) the climate.

Climates By Robin Close. Temperature and weather change every day. It is warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. Sometimes it is wet, and sometimes.

Preview: Biomes How do you think climate effects what vegetation and animals are in a region or area? It will effect the size of the population that supported.

 A biome is a large geographic area with a characteristic climate. A biome consists of several communities / ecosystems. Part of the earth that has more.

Chapter 2.4 BIOMES. Target 1 BIOME I will identify the main factors that are used to determine a biome. a) Climate which is based on: Temperature Precipitation.
IX. Biomes Biomes = a large group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms. Two factors that will determine which biome will be dominant on.
Ecosystems & Organisms. Organisms live and survive by interacting with the living and non-living elements of their ecosystem. Ecosystems have different.

Definition: A group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar dominant communities.
The biosphere is divided into major areas called biomes.
Essential Questions  What are the six major biomes found on Earth?  What factors determine the type of biome found in an area?
Terrestrial (Land) Biomes
World Biomes A variety of ecosystems that are grouped according to similar climates.

Adaptations and Habitat Objective: Students will demonstrate an understanding of adaptations and how they help organisms survive and describe similarities and differences between living things and their life processes.

Biome- A community of plants and animals living together in a particular climate or region. Rainforest Prairie or grassland Tundra Ocean Desert Forest wetland

Tundra Vast, treeless, short growing season Low shrubs, moss, lichen Habitats of the world- Scientists divided the Earth into regions. The factors that determine a biome are latitude, altitude, soil, temperatures, precipitation, sunlight, plants and animals. There are 7 major biomes. Tundra Vast, treeless, short growing season Low shrubs, moss, lichen Musk ox, snowy owl, arctic fox Thick fur and blubber Rich in oil Mining and oil drilling impact life

2. Desert- Dry, less than 10 inches of precipitation per year Hot or cold Scorpions, snakes, lizards , camel Cactus, yucca, tumbleweed Animals sleep during day, store water(camel fat in humps) Building impacts life

3. Wetlands…bog,,,swamp….marsh Land saturated by water all year Grasses, trees, cattails Everglades Florida Alligators, crocodiles, many birds and insects Draining and building, global warming are impacting life

4. Forests…….Deciduous……Coniferous Needle trees (Coniferous) Falling leaves, 4 seasons (deciduous), temperate Pine, oak, maple, fern, poison ivy, moss Deer, caribou, squirrel, geese, turkey Logging and pollution impact life

5. Grassland…Prairie…..Savannah Tall grass, few trees, wild flowers, wheat, best farming soil Great Plains Hawk, bison, many birds , giraffe (Africa) Over-farming the land has great impact

6. Rainforest Large amounts of rain, near the equator, thick layers of growth South America- largest -Amazon Vines, trees (canopy), colorful flowers Boa constrictor, macaw, gorilla, tree frog, insects, butterflies Deforestation has the greatest impact on life

7. Oceans Vast body of salt water, covers ¾ of Earth Atlantic, Pacific, Southern, Arctic, Indian Jellyfish, whales, seals, fish, coral, Kelp, seaweed Over fishing and pollution impact life
