Revision Map skills LO: To be able to successfully read OS maps in exams and use the evidence from them in your answers!

First let us recap on how to do a four figure Grid reference... Along the corridor and up the stairs. You read the vertical line followed by the horizontal. You always use the bottom left corner. Where is the information centre? This is the second line which is 33 This is the first line..It is 47

You try... This is a map of Newquay. Let’s see if we can give some 4 figure references for different tourist amenities. Aquarium Leisure Park Fistral Beach Lusty Glaze Beach Pub in Crantock Train station Hotel near Fistral Sports centre Bus Station Golf course behind Fistral

Next is 6 figure Grid references! Same principle: Along the corridor and up the stairs, but you have to add two more numbers to make it more precise. These pinpoint the actual thing!

Try these again using 6 figure Grid Refs This is a map of Newquay. Let’s see if we can give some 4 figure references for different tourist amenities. Aquarium Leisure Park Fistral Beach Lusty Glaze Beach Pub in Crantock Train station Hotel near Fistral Sports centre Bus Station Golf course behind Fistral

How do we use these in the exam? Try using ‘such as’ here! They will give you a OS map to use. The question will be about a topic like coastal landforms or tourist amenities or the rural urban fringe or expansion of villages. You must use the map to find evidence for these things then say what they are and add the 6 figure GR to the end of your sentence. This is Malham in Yorkshire, part of a National Park. What evidence can we find to suggest that it is popular with tourists? Now try to write this into 4 sentences 63 62 58 59

Distance There have been some questions that require you to add distance. A measurement of how long or wide something is. Last year they asked you to measure the crater size of Yellowstone’s Caldera. Then the answer was in KMs. This means that you need to use the scale line. You will need to ensure you take a RULER into the exam! A B

How does scale work on a OS map? How do you measure distance on a map? Your turn.. Using the St Austell map..How far is it from Lower Porthpean to Carlyon Bay along the south west coast path?

Using the St Austell Map we are now going to put our new map skills into practice. Find these places and give the 4 figure grid references. Par Sands St Blazey Pewithick Polperro Bodmin ‘The Beacon’ Liskeard Lostwithiel Lanivet Bugle Luxulyan Now find these symbols and give the 6 figure GR! The viewpoint at Helman Tor The museum in Lostwithiel. Note where the arrow is pointing. St Austell Train Station Black Head Penrice School Carlyon Bay Golf course The ferry between Fowey Bodinnick The model village at Polperro The Post Office (PO) in Looe Your house!

‘Describe the location’ questions have been seen! You must have clear and specific distances from locations and use compass points to convey the position. This may be to describe the location of a tourist hotel or an area of deforestation. Describe the location of the Moorea Pearl resort. (3 marks) Where is it on the island? What is is near? How far? Name a couple of places to be sure you get the 3 marks.

Using your map sheets describe the location of the following: Your turn: Using your map sheets describe the location of the following: 2) Tolgarrick farm housing development (scale 1 cm =1 km) The areas that have been deforested in Sarawak 3) Heathrow’s proposed 3rd runway 4) The location of St Breward (scale 1 cm = 2 miles)

Photo direction!! A tough one! landform? So which direction was the photographer standing? You! Which way would you be facing?

Can you spot this in the photo?
