ANSWER Luther expected to go to the Diet of Worms (a meeting of the German princes) and defend his criticisms of the Catholic Church, however, when Luther got there, they asked him to recant/take back everything he said. Luther refused. Luther was declared an outlaw, making it a crime to give Luther food or shelter.

ANSWER They declared that at the Council of Trent, salvation comes through faith and good works. The Bible was not the only source of religious truth.

BIG ESSAY What factors helped lead to the spread of Renaissance ideas?

ANSWER The printing press allowed for the spread of Renaissance ideas. Books were being mass produced and thus were cheaper, this allowed for more people to have access to books. At this time, many scholars and church officials only published their works in Latin (the official language of the Catholic Church), scholars began writing in their own vernacular (everyday language: English, Spanish, German…). Finally trade with other people in Europe allowed for the spread of ideas.
