Purpose Recover students that have not returned to school, “inactive” students, or those with chronic attendance problems Provide resources and support to students/families not enrolled in school Heighten district/community awareness of the number of students missing from our schools Create a sense of responsibility/ownership in bringing students back to school Inform community about compulsory education laws and the impact of chronic absenteeism

Sample Overview of the Day

Amnesty Local law enforcement will not cite recovered students for truancy during a specified period This allows students access to educational programs and interventions without fear of legal consequences This includes all schools.  Any students that are caught for truancy will not be cited and they will be referred back to the school. Amnesty Period: September 12TH –16TH September , 2017 Note: the amnesty only covers truancy

Team Responsibilities Home Visit Team Comprised of 1 District employee with home visit experience and 1-2 additional team members Volunteers re-engage out of school youth and determine their enrollment status to provide them appropriate resources. Visit assigned homes of target students who have dropped out, are no-shows or have chronic absences and are not meeting the performance meter.

Team Responsibilities Phone Bank Team District employees only Make calls to determine if students are enrolled in school or educational program Contact families to investigate the reason for student dropping out, being a no-show or having chronic absences. Provide school contact information and resources to families and students that will assist them in transitioning back into school.

Team Responsibilities (continued) Community Outreach Comprised of District employees and volunteers Engage the community (e.g. local businesses) in effort to keep students in school by providing information about school schedules, truancy and the importance of regular school attendance Create and strengthen relationship with community stakeholders

Team Trainings Each team will be trained on their duties and responsibilities the morning of the event Teams will receive a training packet of materials including procedures, guidelines, resources, and useful tips Each packet includes a Student Story Highlight form and a Media Release form. Please be attentive of any student who may have a compelling story they may be willing to share. If you finish your assignment before the end of the day, please report to the Pupil Services Administrator for further instructions.

SRD Partnerships This year the Mayor’s Office, the City’s Community Development Department, City Year and numerous partners will join us in our effort to recover students that are not attending school regularly. Partners have been incorporated in the planning process Mayor’s Office is declaring September 24th a Day of Service Allow us to get into the community and create a web of support Emily end
