VOLLEYBALL RULES/ROTATION 2016 Physical Education VOLLEYBALL RULES/ROTATION 2016

History Originated in Massachusetts In 1895 by William G. Morgan He used the bladder of a basketball for a ball and a tennis net as the first volleyball net. The game was regulated by the YMCA until 1928 when the United States Volleyball Association was founded. Currently 46 million players worldwide

Volleyball Skills/Terminology Forearm Pass (Bump) Overhead Pass (Set) Used to play a ball that is coming below head height. This skill is implemented by bringing the forearms together to make a platform, off which the ball rebounds. The forearm pass is most often used to receive the service or opponents attacking shot. A ball played from above the forehead usually with fingertips of both hands. The hands must be in such a position that the passer is able to see the back of his hands.

Volleyball Skills/Terminology Spike Serve A forceful method of returning the ball across the net. Usually the third contact by a team within its own court. This action puts the ball into play. The server uses the hand or any part of the arm to send the ball over the net and into the opposing court Two types of serves – Overhand & Underhand

Volleyball Skills/Terminology Carry Double Hit An illegal hit Lifting the volleyball with open and separated hands in an upward motion An illegal hit Striking the volleyball with open and separated arms in an upward motion

Scoring Rally Scoring -- A scoring system in volleyball in which a point is scored on every single rally, regardless of which team is serving the ball. Thus, in rally scoring, points can be scored by either the serving or receiving team.

Players Positioning 3 3 3 3 Middle and Back row players CANNOT JUMP INFRONT OF THE ATTACK/SHORT SERVICE LINE Front Row players should be positioned an arm’s length away from the net 2 2 2 2 1 1 1 1 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Rules Game Play Court A (Girls Locker room side) & Court B (Boys Locker room side) Games are played for TIME – not a point value At the end of the game, if it is tied the next rally point will win Only 3 hits per side – A block does not count as a hit Everyone plays – 3 even rows A player cannot hit the volleyball two times in a row You can go anywhere on your side of the court to play the volleyball If a member of your team rotates out of order, the other team will get the serve and a point

Rules Out of Bounds If the volleyball hits the ceiling AND goes over the net it is OUT OF BOUNDS If the volleyball hits the line it is IN Net Play NO ONE CAN TOUCH THE NET AT ANYTIME If one of your team members hits the volleyball into the net another team member can play the ball out of the net

Rules Serving Rules When serving you must wait for the teacher to signal service – usually when the whistle is blown On the serve, if the volleyball hits the net and goes over it is a LEGAL SERVE Unlimited short servers – During a serve, a player can move up to the attack line to serve. There are no do-overs when serving. One attempt to properly serve the ball over the net.

s Rotation The rotation is the same on every court When in doubt – follow the person next to you If you reach the end of the court you drop back to the next row The person who just served will rotate to the top left corner s
