Teaching Leave No Trace People learn best when motivated to learn Seek out motivators and utilize them Participants learn via their senses Experiences that utilize each of our senses maximizes our learning People need to trust you before they will listen to you Facilitate positive experiences Always take advantage of the knowledge of the group – they are a glass half-full

How people learn Different methods of learning require diverse methods of teaching Auditory (passive) Visual (passive) Kinesthetic (active) 15% of the message is received via words 85% of the message is received via paraverbal language including tone, pitch, volume and body language

How people learn Students are 5x more likely to remember visual information over auditory information It is understood that auditory retention of information is 20% effective It is understood that a combination of auditory and visual information is 50% effective in retaining information It is understood that active involvement, or kinesthetic learning, is 90% effective in retaining information

Leave No Trace Training Awareness Workshops Any type of formal Leave No Trace training that is one-day or less in length Trainer Courses Are typically two-day trainings put on in an outdoor setting by Master Educators. Trainer courses are designed to help you better understand and teach Leave No Trace skills and ethics. Master Educator Courses A Master Educator course is typically five-days in length and designed for people who are actively teaching others backcountry skills or providing recreation information to the public. Successful graduates of the Master Educator course have the ability to train others in Leave No Trace skills as well as facilitate trainer courses.

What is an Awareness Workshop? Any type of formal Leave No Trace training that is one-day or less in length An introduction to Leave No Trace Principles Frequently activity or audience specific Frequently locally or regionally focused An ideal activity at tradeshows, symposiums or conferences Field based or multi-media centred Flexible (i.e. – not curriculum based) Purposeful

Teaching Leave No Trace When facilitating an Awareness Workshop… Know the target audience Seek out motivators for the group Involve the participants in their learning Take note of the energy level Ask questions to determine pre-existing knowledge Continually read the audience Anticipate interests and possible questions Poke fun at the funny… Keep the vibe alive!

Awareness Workshops Awareness Workshops In effort to track the number of Leave No Trace impressions, Leave No Trace Canada asks its Trainers and Master Educators to submit Awareness Workshop Reports whenever possible.

What is a Trainer Course? Instructed by Leave No Trace Master Educators An introduction to Leave No Trace Principles An introduction to teaching activities related to outdoor activities and Leave No Trace Frequently locally or regionally focused Field based or multi-media centred Two days in length Curriculum focused Purposeful

Trainer Course Requirements Trainer course core curriculum must include the following: A minimum of 16 total hours of experiential instruction, 10 hours of which must be conducted in the field. One night camping in a front-country and/or backcountry location is strongly recommended. The role and function of a Leave No Trace Trainer The principles and ethics of Leave No Trace Teaching skills and techniques and student learning styles At least one student led teaching exercise by each participant Overview and history of the international Leave No Trace program The role and function of Leave No Trace Canada and its relationship with the Leave No Trace the Center for Outdoor Ethics See National Training Guidelines for details

Trainer Course Requirements Requirements for Master Educators to facilitate Trainer courses include: Current membership with Leave No Trace Canada Submission of signed Individual Training Agreement Minimum Standard First Aid Certificate with BCLS Appropriate levels of individual tort insurance, OR Insured through sponsoring organization Experience as an outdoor leader

Trainer Course Requirements Additional requirements for Master Educators to facilitate Trainer courses include: Submission of all required paperwork upon completion of each course, including: Membership forms and associated funds for participants Course Roster Participant Information Sheet Disclaimer and Liability Disclosure Form Use of a co-instructor for all Trainer courses exceeding 12 participants Strict adherence to the National Training Guidelines

Trainer Course Requirements Requirements for organizations to facilitate Trainer courses include: Partner in good standing with Leave No Trace Canada Strict adherence to the National Training Guidelines Use only Master Educator(s) in good standing with Leave No Trace Canada Appropriate levels of insurance as outlined in National Training Guidelines Disseminate and submit to Leave No Trace Canada the required Leave No Trace documentation for new Trainers, including; Individual Training Agreements for Trainers Leave No Trace Canada Memberships and dues per participant Disclaimer of Liability and Assumption of Risk Form Personal Information Consent Form Participant Information Sheet

Trainer Course Requirements How to run a Trainer Course… Complete a Master Educator Course Sign and submit Individual Training agreement An Organization Training Agreement must be signed and submitted if Trainer courses are being run through an organization Inform Leave No Trace Canada of your course and submit proof of requisite insurance and risk management policies as required Ensure you possess a minimum Standard First Aid and BCLS (CPR) training Ensure you possess adequate insurance coverage Read the National Training Guidelines Follow Trainer Course Core Curriculum Submit requisite documentation upon completion of each course

Lesson Planning Lesson Planning requires: Goals Objectives Purpose Motivator Activity Style

Lesson Planning Every lesson plan requires a goal and series of accompanying objectives Relate your goals and objectives toward a specific purpose Consider including personal stories, analogies, facts and figures and humour as introductory motivators Layout the logistics of any presentation to provide reminders as you go Wrap up your lesson with a summary or conclusion Document your lesson plans!

Teaching Sessions Each participant will teach a 30-45 minute presentation on a Leave No Trace Principle Teaching sessions are intended to build confidence in teaching and facilitating Leave No Trace information Each participant will submit a lesson plan detailing their presentation Teaching sessions and accompanying lesson plans are designed to assist new Master Educators in building their Leave No Trace “Tool Box” Consider opportunities to address diverse learning styles and multiple intelligences Be creative!
