Warm Up How did Manifest Destiny impact the Civil War? What was a previous compromise between the North and South that tried to deal with the issue of slavery?

The Slavery Issue The practice of slavery threatened to destroy the United States. Northern voices called slavery barbaric, while Southern voices claimed slavery an economic necessity.

Bleeding Kansas Popular Sovereignty- the political doctrine which provided for the settlers of federal territorial lands to decide the status (free or slave) under which they would join the Union. Pro-slavery and anti-slavery fought over the right to have slavery in the territory.

Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857) ". . . . . . We think they [people of African ancestry] are . . . not included, and were not intended to be included, under the word "citizens" in the Constitution, and can therefore claim none of the rights and privileges which that instrument provides for and secures to citizens of the United States. . . ." — Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, speaking for the majority  

John Brown’s Raid on Harpers Ferry--1859 Led a group of people in a raid against a federal arsenal and he failed In the North he became a hero. The event led to a growing distrust between the two sides.

Election of 1860 Abraham Lincoln won the close election. He was a northerner who was opposed to the spread of slavery in to the new territories. He was elected even though he won no southern states. South Carolina secedes in Dec. 1860

South Population- 9 million (3 million slaves, 6 million free people) Factories- 20,600 Miles of railroad- 9,000 Bank Deposits- $47 million Cotton Production- 5 million bales
