Eleven from a lab is associated with the sci-fi genre, and the conventions of character being related to sci-fi appeals to a certain audience with interest in supernatural themes in relation to TV shows. And the introduction of the monster/demogorgan conforms to the horror audience and allows for adventure during the series therefore appealing to a wide variety of possible target audiences.

What is genre? Made up of… Character and story Audio Set Technical Definition… a style or category of art, music, or literature.

Steve Neal's genre theory… Genre is an instance of repetition and difference Genre either conforms or subverts Difference is absolutely essential to the economy of genre For example in “BACK TO THE FUTURE 3” the setting is in the wild west throughout the majority of the film yet contains comedic value and sci-fi elements such as time travel to make it subvert from an ordinary ‘wild west’ film.
