Summer Packet Please pass your summer packet up to the front. Make sure your name is on the packet Ask for a paper clip if you need one For those who did not receive a summer packet, I have some work for you to do (Due Tuesday, September 5th)

Satisfactory performance on summer work & prerequisite assessment Prerequisites Honors Precalculus 90+ assessment average: BC 90- assessment average: AB Satisfactory performance on summer work & prerequisite assessment “Calculus is easy, it’s the algebra that’s hard!” Ability to extend and apply knowledge to novel situations

Course Goals Analyze functions represented in various ways: verbal, numerical, analytical, and graphical (Verbally NAG) Understand differential and integral calculus and the relationship between the two Communicate mathematically Model situations with calculus Use technology appropriately

AB BC AB vs BC Course 1 semester of college calculus in 1 year 2 semesters of college calculus in 1 year AP score includes BC score (1-5) & AB subscore (1-5)

AB vs BC Course (continued) Functions & Limits Differential Calculus Integral Calculus BC Functions & Limits Parametric, polar, vector Differential Calculus Euler’s method Integral Calculus Integration by parts Partial fractions Improper integrals Length of a curve Series + = not in AB curriculum

Section I - Multiple-Choice (105 min.) Exam Format Section I - Multiple-Choice (105 min.) Part A no calculator (30 questions, 60 min) Part B calc reqd (15 questions, 45 min) Section II - Free Response (90 min.) Part A calc reqd (2 problems, 30 min) Part B no calculator (4 problems, 60 min) BC exam score includes an AB sub-score

Extremely well qualified Exam Scoring AP Score 5 4 3 2 1 Meaning Extremely well qualified Well qualified Qualified Possibly qualified No recommendation Passing Not passing

Classroom Rules and Guidelines RESPECT all others in the classroom. Work quietly and pay attention when others in the class are talking or working Observe all rules listed in the STUDENT HANDBOOK – i.e. no hats, no profanity, etc… Out of respect for the class, please be ON TIME! Come to class PREPARED - Materially, Mentally, and Physically

Suggested Materials 3 ring binder (1 1 2 or 2 inch binder) Loose-leaf paper Pencils!!! Dividers (truly optional) Calculator TI-84 series (TI-83 is permitted, but not recommended) TI-Nspire with or without CAS TI-89 (I have no familiarity with this series)

Attendance and Make up Work Policies Check the “While You Were Gone” box for work All make up work must be turned in/made up within 3 school days Please inform me if you know you are going to be out!

Grading Policy 1st Qtr 2nd Qtr 3rd Qtr 4th Qtr Semester 50% - Tests 40% - Tests 50% - Tests 40% - Tests 40% - 1st/3rd Qtr 25% - Quizzes 20% - Quizzes 25% - Quizzes 20% - Quizzes 40% - 2nd/4th Qtr 25% - HW 20% - HW 25% - HW 20% - Quizzes 20% - 1st Sem or 20% - Project 20% - Project 2nd Sem exam With the new 10 point grading scale, I will no longer allow test corrections! However, if I give 5 or more tests in a quarter, then I will drop the lowest test score.

Homework Grading Homework is graded on completeness/effort, not necessarily on correctness. Homework is checked at the beginning of class. If you do not have your homework and the homework log sheet out when I come by, you may not be given credit! 10 points for fully attempting every problem on homework 5 points for more attempting more than half, less than 100% of homework 0 points for anything less than 50%

Other Policies Seating Assignments Be in your seats at the beginning of class AND at the end of class (no lining up at my door!!!) Since this is a year-long class, we will mix it up periodically. Restroom: You may not go 10 minutes before or after any bell or during the initial lecture. Tardy policy: If you are tardy without a pass and have not been swept, then I will hand you a sweep form. Behavior – Just be a good, respectful kid!

Honor Code You alone are responsible for your own learning. Cheating is unacceptable and will not be tolerated This includes copying homework or telling another class what is on a test!). Consequences: Your parents/guardians will be contacted, A discipline referral will be submitted Zero on the assignment. Since cheating sometimes involves 2 or more people, all complicit participants receive the same consequences. Do not do anything to make me suspect that you are not being honest.

Sports-related/Field Trip Absences These are excused activities and they are a very important component of your high school experience. However, it is your responsibility to get your assignments prior to the day of the activity, and to have it prepared for the next school day that you return. Failure to do so will result with a zero grade.

Missed Quizzes/Tests I announce all tests and quizzes several days before the actual test, usually with 1 day of review prior to the test. If you miss the review day, you are still expected to take the test on the announced day. If you were here for the review, but missed the test, you are expected to take the test when you return.

Pop Quizzes/Extra Credit Pop quizzes – Pop quizzes cannot be made-up. They will simply be omitted. Extra Credit – Some assignments (test/quizzes/class work) will have extra credit problems. I will also award a 5 point bonus coupon for each homework activity log with a grade of 100. I do not give extra credit opportunities on an individual basis!!!

Tutoring My tutoring schedule is If you need help … Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:45 until 4:45 Fridays by appointment If you need help … Consider starting a peer study group Stay for tutoring or help sessions Do your assignments and ask questions in class Utilize grade recovery opportunities
