9. Antibiotic resistance- When bacteria mutate and adapt to survive an antibiotic treatment. Produces a resistant population of bacteria that reproduce more resistant bacteria Caused by overuse/incorrect use of antibiotics in foods, or to treat sicknesses. Known as SUPERBUGS - They are difficult to treat. Ex. MRSA - Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureas

Vaccines are a PREVENTION!!!!!! Antibiotics are a TREATMENT!!!!!!!!!! 10. Vaccine: Drug that helps your body develop immunity/resistance to a disease (so you never get it); if you come in contact with that disease, your immune system has produced antibodies that say “Nope!”; vaccines are available to keep you from getting some bacterial diseases – ex. DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus bacteria vaccine-one of your immunizations) Vaccines are a PREVENTION!!!!!! Antibiotics are a TREATMENT!!!!!!!!!!

Bacteria can be helpful, too! 11. Bioremediation – a waste management technique that involves the use of organisms to remove or neutralize pollutants from a contaminated site. Ex. Bacteria can be used to clean up an oil spill or chemical spill (bacteria break down sludge in septic tanks, too)

How to Prevent Getting and Spreading Bacterial Infections PREVENTION! PREVENTION! PREVENTION! Immunizations (vaccines) whenever possible WASH HANDS OFTEN Don’t shake hands, kiss, or hug a sick person. Stay away! Don’t drink or eat after others or use combs, keys, pens, doorknobs after a sick person Cover mouth & nose when coughing or sneezing Pasteurization of milk and other food products Cook meats to the proper temperature Avoid wild animals & water from rivers or unknown sources Refrigerate all leftovers quickly Wash all used cooking surfaces and tools Quarantine

Treatment of bacterial infections Antibiotics Rest Stay hydrated – lots of fluids Take Tylenol or something to keep fever down, etc.
