Introduction Thesis Statement Types of Arguments Conclusion

The introduction has a "hook or grabber" to catch the reader's attention. Some “popular" openings include: 1. An unusual detail/fact: (About 10% of the world's population is left-handed.!) 2. A strong statement: (Cigarettes are the number one cause of lighter sales in Canada!) 3. A Quotation: (Elbert Hubbard once said , "Truth is stronger than fiction.") 4. A Question. (Have you ever considered how many books we'd read if it were not for television?)

The introduction should also include a thesis or focus statement. Topic- Cats make better pets than dogs. There are three objectives of a thesis statement: It tells the reader the specific topic of your essay. It imposes manageable limits on that topic. It suggests the organization of your paper.

Introduction "A dog is man's best friend Introduction "A dog is man's best friend." That common saying may contain some truth, but dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy. For many people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent house pets. Where is the thesis statement?

A more advanced thesis statement would look like this… Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent house pets because they are affectionate, they are not loud or disruptive, and they are easy to take care of.

In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats In the first place, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they're not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!

In the second place, cats are civilized members of the household In the second place, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make other loud noises. Most cats don't even meow very often. They generally lead a quiet existence. Cats also don't often have "accidents." Mother cats train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cats will use it without fail from that time on. Even stray cats usually understand the concept when shown the box and will use it regularly. Cats do have claws, and owners must make provision for this. A tall scratching post in a favorite cat area of the house will often keep the cat content to leave the furniture alone. As a last resort, of course, cats can be declawed.

Lastly, one of the most attractive features of cats as house pets is their ease of care. Cats do not have to be walked. They get plenty of exercise in the house as they play, and they do their business in the litter box. Cleaning a litter box is a quick, painless procedure. Cats also take care of their own grooming. Bathing a cat is almost never necessary because under ordinary circumstances cats clean themselves. Cats are more particular about personal cleanliness than people are. In addition, cats can be left home alone for a few hours without fear. Unlike some pets, most cats will not destroy the furnishings when left alone. They are content to go about their usual activities until their owners return.

Cats are low maintenance, civilized companions Cats are low maintenance, civilized companions. People who have small living quarters or less time for pet care should appreciate these characteristics of cats. However, many people who have plenty of space and time still opt to have a cat because they love the cat personality. In many ways, cats are the ideal house pet.

Offer examples and evidence from your own life or other people’s experiences. My cat used to welcome me everyday when I came home. It would hear me walking down the hallway of my apartment building and it would start howling for me. When I picked it up, it would stop howling and purr contentedly. The cat would make me feel welcomed in a much nicer way than when the dog jumps up on me now.

Big names Important people or experts can make your argument more convincing. Sir Isaac Newton: philosopher   Sir Isaac Newton, famous for his laws of motion and gravity, was a confirmed cat lover who was deeply concerned about the welfare of his feline friends. Therefore, so his research would go uninterrupted, and his cats should not feel restricted and be at liberty to wander freely in and out when the doors were closed, he invented the cat-flap.

Abraham Lincoln: US President (1809)   Abe came to presidential office accompanied by Tabby, a cat belonging to his son. “No matter how much cats fight, there always seems to be plenty of kittens.” Quote by Abraham Lincoln.

Facts and Numbers-Research Using reliable research can help your argument sound more convincing. The truth is that based on numbers alone, there are more cats than dogs in America (81.7 million pet cats and 72.1 million dogs, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook, 2007 edition).

Writing a conclusion Three strategies. Use quotes. Why is your opinion important? Summarizing the main points and arguments.

Restate your thesis or focus statement. The Conclusion: summarize the most important details of the argument and state once again what the reader is to believe or do. Restate your thesis or focus statement. Summarize the main points: The conclusion enables your reader to recall the main points of your position. In order to do this you can paraphrase the main points of your argument. Write a personal comment or call for action. You can do this: With a Prediction. With a Question. With Recommendations. With a Quotation.

Dogs are better than Cats

Dogs are often called man’s best friend and make ideal pets.

The most attractive quality of a dog is its faith in its owner and its loyalty. They always greet us when we come home and they will never leave us even in a dire situation. For example, there was a very sick man and the dog barked and barked until the rescue team arrived.

Furthermore dogs are strong animals that will protect us Furthermore dogs are strong animals that will protect us. Houses with dogs are considered much safer than even those with burglar alarms. Not only will they stop thieves, but they will also guard against fire. For example there was a serious fire and a dog managed to pull its owner out.

And finally dogs can be trained to help people And finally dogs can be trained to help people. Dogs can do a number of things that people can not. For example, they can sniff out drugs, find bodies, illicit DVD’s and hunt down prisoners. They’re also used to help the elderly and disabled.

To sum up, dogs are really friendly, companions.
