Why are core values important? What does the word “CORE” mean? The core is the heart and soul of our entity. The core is the center of something that keeps you grounded. Foundation What are “VALUES”? Deeply held beliefs Highest priorities What you stand for So what do we mean when we talk about CORE VALUES? (discuss)

What is the Medal of Honor?? The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force which can be bestowed upon an individual serving in the Armed Services of the United States. The Medal is generally presented to Recipients by the President of the United States. Current Statistics 3,498 TOTAL RECIPIENTS LIVING RECIPIENTS 19 DOUBLE RECIPIENTS

While watching the video, “Heroes Among Us”, look for examples of the What is a hero? A hero is many things. A hero is someone who honors their core values. A hero is someone who has and acts out of courage, integrity, patriotism, citizenship, commitment and sacrifice. YOU can be a hero. WE can all be heroes. We can be heroes in the classroom, at Rippon, outside in our community, and everywhere we go. Throughout the year we will be defining these core values and learn to recognize acts of heroism. While watching the video, “Heroes Among Us”, look for examples of the CORE VALUES CITIZENSHIP COMMITMENT COURAGE INTEGRITY PATRIOTISM SACRIFICE

Small Group Activity Task 2: As a group, define the core value you circled. Task 3: Identify at least 3 synonyms for your group’s core value. Task 1: Circle the core value that your group has been assigned. Antonyms: Courage: brave, fearless, having integrity Integrity: doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Doing things without being asked, Following the rules regardless of the circumstances. Honest, truthful. Patriotism: respect for country, supporting your community, keeping your community clean, volunteering, celebrate freedom and independence Task 5: Give an example from the video or your personal experience of the core value your group was assigned. Task 4: Identify at least 3 antonyms for your group’s core value.

COURAGE - facing difficulties despite fear Synonyms: bravery, fearless, daring Antonyms: coward, fearful, scared INTEGRITY – having moral and ethical principals Synonyms: virtuous, honest, trustworthy Antonyms: dishonesty, not trustworthy, corrupt PATRIOTISM – support and defense of one’s country Synonyms: loyal, public spirit Antonyms: traitor, spy, conspirator, betrayer CITIZENSHIP – commitment to duty and civic virtue (school community, neighborhood, city, etc) Synonyms: responsible, caring, volunteering in the community Antonyms: irresponsible, selfish COMMITMENT – a pledge or promise, doing what you say you’ll do no matter what Synonyms: determined, agreement, guarantee Antonyms: break a promise, irresponsible, not trustworthy SACRIFICE – giving up something good for something better. Synonyms: selfless, giving, commit Antonyms: selfish, withhold, greedy
