Advanced Suspension Technologies Used in Cars

Suspension systems are one of the most crucial parts, which play a vital role in providing comfort to the occupants.

Automakers are rapidly making strides in the field of advanced suspension technologies for providing optimum comfort.

Here are some recent innovations that will make the ride more comfortable i. Magnetic Dampers ii. Active curve tilting iii. Hydraulic roll control iv. Height adjustable suspension

Magnetic dampers work by altering current through a ferrous fluid, resulting in an adjustment of the stiffness to the driving conditions.

It is a continuously adaptive system and quickly adapts to the gear shifting habit of the driver & also the terrain.

The response of a magnetic suspension system is much faster than conventional adaptive dampers.

It is useful for bad road terrain, high speed cornering, sudden acceleration, and braking.

Active curve tilting

Used in Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG coupe, it is designed to counter the effects of centrifugal force when turning into corners.

It abandons the use of anti-roll bars & raises the suspension spring platforms, automatically adjusting it to the turnings taken by the car.

The stereo camera mounted behind the windshield of the car is capable of monitoring a curve up to 49 feet away.

Basically, if the road doesn't have a nicely banked corner, the car simulates one, for its occupants.

Hydraulic roll control

The 2015 Audi RS7 is the latest car to gain a hydraulic cross-linked suspension, which Audi calls Dynamic Ride Control.

To counteract the body roll, conventional suspensions use steel anti-roll bars. But, hydraulic systems send fluid to the opposite sides of the vehicle through passive weight transfer during normal driving.

When you're not pulling major g's, the system stays out of the way, allowing unimpeded wheel travel and a smooth ride.

Fluid from the two outside wheel hydraulic cylinders flows to the accumulator to raise the suspension's roll stiffness.

This counters the centrifugal force, reducing the degree of sinking on the car's outer side & helps to minimize passenger fluctuation of view.

Height Adjustable Suspension

It is a feature that allows the motorist to vary the ride height or ground clearance of the vehicle.

Height adjustment is most often achieved by air or oil compression, which is used for the springs of the vehicle.

When the pressure is varied – the vehicle body rises or lowers.

It is manually controlled by the driver. But, certain modern designs at high speed on-board electronics system alone take the decision to lower the car.
