Word Processing

What is a word processor? Software that allows a user to input, edit, organize and format text. (Primary Function) Examples Include: MS Word $119.00 (FREE for WRDSB students) Word Pad Free Pages $20.00 WordPerfect $250.00 1 in 7 people use MS Office (that is about 1.1 billion people)

Open Source / Free Alternatives http://www.openoffice.org/ http://www.libreoffice.org/ Cloud Based (and free) Google Docs

Terminology Margins: An invisible barrier that contains the text on a page. Measured from the top, bottom, left and right edge inward. The margin applies to an entire page. These terms are all introduced in the first task – paragraph alignment and indents. Be sure to live demo these terms on dummy text before giving them the chance to practice.

Terminology Alignment (aka Justification): How text is placed on the page relative to the margins. Common horizontal alignment includes: Left, Right, Center and Full (or Justified).

Terminology Indent: The distance text is set away from the margin. Measured from the left and right margins. Header / Footer: Text above the top margin / Text Below the bottom margin. Same on every page

Terminology Tab: A special character that allows for a predetermined measurement of space set by the user. Usually used for indentation of a paragraph and creating equally spaced lists. Line Spacing: The # of empty lines of blank space between each line of text. Single spacing is NO empty lines. Double spacing is 1 empty line between each line of text. Triple Spacing is 2 empty lines.

Terminology Single Spacing Double Spacing Triple Spacing Tab: A special character that allows for a predetermined measurement of space set by the user. Usually used for indentation of a paragraph and creating equally spaced lists. Single Spacing Double Spacing Triple Spacing Line Spacing: Are you actually reading this? Did you think I wouldn’t put any useful information in here – this isn’t just filler you know. Ok, you got me, this is actually just filler to demonstrate double spacing Margins: A word of advice. Don’t ever, EVER use triple spacing for an English assignment. If you want to make your essay longer, do more research and write more. How empty lines of space in a 21 spaced document? What about 1.5 spacing?

Terminology Word Wrap: This is when the words automatically move to the next line without pressing the Enter Key. Also known as a soft return. This helps define what makes a paragraph. Hard Return: When you press the enter key to move to the next line. This starts a new paragraph.
