The Epic A View into a Culture

Characteristics of an Epic Poem A. The hero is of national or international importance – of high social position – a king or prince.

B. The setting is vast: many locations- world, universe. C. The action involves the deeds of super human courage. D. Supernatural forces are involved and play an important role in the plot.

E. The poet uses elevated style- the language is formal and grand. F. It is a long, narrative poem.

Qualities of an Epic hero Importance is of national or international importance. He is a character from history or legend. The hero’s most remarkable traits are those valued by the society he represents. 1.Loyalty 2. Compassion 3. Perseverance 4. Intelligence 5. Courage 6.Physical strength

Choose any three character traits of Odysseus and explain how he illustrates each in the various episodes. Strive for three examples of each. Then Explain why the traits are or are not valuable today. 1.Loyalty 2. Compassion 3. Perseverance 4. Intelligence 5. Courage 6.Physical strength
