Learning to Manage Your Life Adult Roles & Responsibilities Mrs. Torp

Manager – someone who makes decisions that Manager – someone who makes decisions that help to lead to accomplishing specific goals   Goal – a desired outcome Resource – a tool/supply that is a source of help or information when used effectively

Role – a specific function one assumes in life; a Role – a specific function one assumes in life; a socially expected behavior pattern determined by a person’s status in society   Values – things of ideas of importance Consequences – the end results of an action or choice

Learning to Manage: A successful adult is one who accepts the role of manager of his/her life and effectively uses resources and evaluates consequences to make decisions that will lead to the accomplishment of goals that reflect his/her values in life.

Decision-Making Model: Identify the problem to be solved (decision to be made). State the problem as a goal in order to focus on the positive and the future. Choosing a college   2.Gather the facts/identify your needs. Ask questions to get the “whole picture” regarding the situation. What are you looking for in a college? Which ones offer what you want to study? Identify advantages/disadvantages of each (size, reputation, cost, location, etc.)

Which colleges fit the criteria you have established? 3. Identify your options. Which colleges fit the criteria you have established?   4. Consider the consequences, both long and short term. Revisit the advantages/disadvantages list. Will you be able to live with the consequences?

5. Choose the best option. Weigh the choices against your values and beliefs. Think for yourself. Which college best fits your needs and values?   6. Evaluate the decision and the process. Is the choice working for you? …If not, what part of the process do you need to research further? Make adjustments/changes as needed.
