2nd Year Subject Choice What are the subjects Who can help me out What do I need to consider Sending back your forms

All Study Core Subjects NON EXAMINABLE Religious Education Wellbeing which covers:       Wellbeing Civic Social & Political Ed. (CSPE)       Social Political & Health Ed (SPHE)       Physical Education (PE) EXAMINABLE Irish English Mathematics History   Geography (plus 4 choice subjects)

Choice Subjects - Choose 6 Subjects in Order of Preference (The school will try to get you your top 4) Art Business Studies French German Home Economics Music Science

Who can help you out? Parents – can play a role Teachers – can discuss what their subject is like  Guidance Counsellor – can tell you the consequences in relation to access to 3rd level college e.g. University Other students- ask pupils who are already studying subjects at Junior Cycle how they find them N.B. Remember at the end of day, it's your choice!

So what subjects do I keep?

Careful Considerations Subjects that subdivide (split) in 5th Year Science Biology Physics Chemistry Business Accounting

Careful Considerations Regarding Subjects Be careful with Science and 3rd Language Many science and science related courses/careers require a science subject e.g. to be a nurse, a doctor, vet, a student needs at least one science subject. 3rd Language (French or German) – Unless you have an exemption, 3rd Language is a General Entry Requirement for direct entry from Secondary School into many Universities. e.g. UCC

3rd Language (French or German) Required Unless you have an exemption, University College Cork, Galway, Dublin, Maynooth (National University of Ireland) require a 3rd language for many courses. Cadetship in Army, Air Corps, Cadetship in Navy require a 3rd language.  However there is no language requirement if you have already been to a University or Insititute of Technology before being a cadet.

3rd Language NOT REQUIRED as General Entry Requirement Trinity College Dublin University of Limerick Dublin City University Institutes of Technology Science and Nursing courses at University e.g. UCC Post Leaving Certificate Courses – Courses between 2nd Level (where you are now) and 3rd Level College

University Matriculation (General Entry) Requirements https://www.ucc.ie/en/study/courses/ Go into UCC website,  (do not use google search, as old information may come up)  Click on UCC undergraduate courses, then choose specific courses  to see minimum entry requirements.

Institutes of Technology General Entry Requirements Maths & English or Irish

Considerations 1st - The subjects you need for your future 2nd - What subjects you enjoy  3rd – What you feel you have an ability for 4th - What are the relevant/helpful subjects 5th - What type of learner you are 6th - Are you getting a balance of subjects –practical/non practical

What not to do Do not choose subjects according to: Who is teaching the subject What your friends are doing Amount of work or homework you think is involved in the subject

The safe bets As long as you have: English Irish Maths Science 3rd Language – French and/or German You are covered for almost every course in country.  However if you really struggle with a choice subject, there are back door routes into courses without them.

Info on-line www.qualifax.ie     Gives information on which subjects are needed for  courses, as well as information on all college courses www.careersportal.ie      Courses Section Junior Cert subjects www.curriculumonline.ie      Information on curriculum content for Junior Cycle All Colleges/Universities/etc. have their own websites e.g. ucc.ie, cit.ie, ul.ie, etc.

Filling out your form List your subject options (your choice subjects) in order of choice 1-6, 1 being the subject you are most interested in keeping. The school will try to get you your top 4. Forms will be available to fill in on-line after the mid-term break (date yet to be confirmed).

Any Questions? If you have any doubts at all about your subject choices or are unsure of which ones to choose, please make an appointment to see Ms Daly or Ms Hennessy.  We are located near Joan's office.
