Agonist- the working muscle in a movement, contracting and shortening Question 1 Cranium- Projects the brain when heading a ball in football. The ribs- Protects the vital organs during a tackle in rugby. Identify the pathway of air into the body.

Gaseous Exchange Gaseous Exchange – the 'swapping’ of gases between the alveolar air and the blood Gaseous exchange occurs through a process called diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of particles from a region where they are in high concentration to a region where they are in low concentration.

Gaseous Exchange Therefore…… When the concentration of oxygen is high in the alveolus and low in the capillary, the oxygen will move into the capillary. And…….. When the concentration of carbon dioxide is high in the capillary and low in the alveolus, the oxygen will move into the alveolus.

Characteristics of the alveoli The alveoli are bunches of tiny air sacks inside the lungs. When you breathe in, they fill with air. Alveoli have a large surface area They have moist thin walls which are one cell thick. The allows a short distance for diffusion to take place They are covered in lots of capillaries that allow a large blood supply. .

Gaseous Exchange The role of haemoglobin Haemoglobin carries oxygen around the body. It is a red pigment found in red blood cells. When haemoglobin and oxygen combine they create oxyhaemoglobin. Haemoglobin

OXY! Hi, I’m Oxy. I’m an oxygen molecule and I am older than 2.5 billion years. The human body needs me in order to create energy in the muscles, however there is a process called gaseous exchange I need to go through to get there.

Bronchi The trachea splits left and right to enter the left and right lungs. They then split into smaller and smaller bronchi. Bronchioles Small bronchi divide into bronchioles which are very narrow tubes less than 1mm in diameter. Mouth & Nose We breathe in through our nose and mouth. Trachea The air travels into the trachea. The inside of the trachea is covered in small hairs called cilia. The cilia filter the air and catch dust and other particles. The trachea is kept open by rings of cartilage. Alveoli The bronchioles have small ‘grape like’ clusters at the ends called alveoli. There are usually several alveoli at the end of each bronchiole. The function of the alveoli is the exchange of gases. Alveoli are surrounded by capillaries. Transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide occur through the walls of the alveoli.
