The Paterson, NJ Silk Mills

What type of work do you think is being performed in this photo?

Photo 1 shows one of Paterson's large dye houses Photo 1 shows one of Paterson's large dye houses. Notice the water running out of drains in the building. The soft water of the Passaic River was supposed to be particularly good for dyeing.

Silk weaving mill in the Great Falls/S.U.M. Historic District.

Photo 4 shows rows of Jacquard looms Photo 4 shows rows of Jacquard looms. The large punched cards hanging on the left programmed the looms to produce the elaborate and colorful silk fabrics demanded by the New York fashion industry. Although the looms were usually well spaced and protected in newer mills, government inspectors reported that machinery in the older mills was often packed so closely that it was difficult to move about without being struck by moving parts of the equipment.
