Emotional and Mental Health LESSON 1

Objective: Students will be able to: 1. Explain the interrelationship of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual health.

Definitions Culture – the beliefs, behaviors, arts and social structures that people in a society learn, share, and pass on to future generations Dimension – one of the elements or factors that make up a complete personality or entity Emotions – feelings about events or thoughts; occur as part of a complex mental and physical sequence Interrelated – having a mutual relationship Maintain – to tend or keep in a state or repair or wellness Stress – the feeling of being under pressure due to change or any physical or mental demand made on the body Troublesome – causing emotional upset, worry, or anxiety

Dimensions of Health Physical health— Physical health has to do with the body. When a person has good physical health the body feels well and strong, and all the parts of the body work the way they should. -being physically active -wearing seat belts/helmets -eating in healthy ways -wearing sunscreen -taking care of medical needs -getting enough sleep -protecting the body from being injured -staying away from alcohol/tobacco/drugs Physical health has to do with the body. Examples:

Dimensions of Health Mental/emotional health— Mental health has to do with how a person thinks, feels and acts as he or she copes with life. A person with good emotional health can feel, express and respond to a wide range of emotions in healthy ways and share those emotions with others. -getting support for troublesome feelings -managing stress -learning skills to make healthy decisions Mental health has to do with how a person thinks, feels, and acts as he/she copes with life. Example:

Dimensions of Health Social health— Social health has to do with your relationships with others. People with good social health can connect with and contribute to family, friends and the wider community. -making friends -meeting new people -forming healthy relationships -giving support to and get support from others -taking part in group activities -communicating with others Social health has to do with your relationships with others. Example:

Dimensions of Health Spiritual health— Spiritual health has to do with how you find meaning and purpose in your life. People with good spiritual health have a sense of something bigger than themselves and their own day-to-day lives. -religious beliefs -personal values -culture Spiritual health has to do with how you find meaning and purpose in life. Example:
