Be Prepared or Be Scared! BSHAA Professional Development Day Stansted 17th March 2012

Be Prepared or Be Scared! Preparing for what? HPC registration renewals must all be completed by 31st July 2012. Any time from early May, the HPC will randomly select between 2.5% and 5% of HADs for an audit of their CPD activities during the previous two years. The letter will ask you to comply with the 5th Standard for CPD............

Be Prepared or Be Scared! Therefore, the letter will ask you to:- Present a written profile explaining how you have met the Standards for CPD. Your CPD Profile must be your own work and it must be supported by evidence. You will have about 2 months in which to respond or a reminder is sent. If no response within one more month, de-registration may occur.

Be Prepared or Be Scared! Assume it will be you!

Being Prepared and Not Scared!

Being Prepared and Not Scared! Four steps to being prepared:- First step is knowing the four standards which your CPD Profile must relate to. Second step is having an organised set of CPD records – BSHAA online CPD support system is ideal for this. Third step is knowing how to complete your CPD Profile. Fourth step is getting it right!

A reminder of how the HPC expects you to be prepared if you are chosen to prove that you have met their standards for CPD and can be registered for another two years!

HPC Standards for CPD Registrants must “maintain a continuous, up-to-date and accurate record of CPD activities”. So, your CPD Profile should show that:- You had a CPD plan or framework. You recorded what you learnt after every CPD activity. You regularly added to the evidence of your learning activities in your CPD portfolio.

HPC Standards for CPD Registrants must “demonstrate that CPD activities are a mixture of learning activities relevant to current or future practice”. So, your CPD Profile should show that:- You had a variety of CPD activities such as meetings, reading journals, using the internet, learning from clients and colleagues. You followed a plan or framework for your CPD plan based on what you personally needed to learn to improve your practice.

HPC Standards for CPD Registrants must “ensure that CPD has contributed to the quality of your practice and service delivery” AND “that your CPD benefits the service user”. These combine to mean that your CPD Profile must show that what you learnt from your varied CPD activities:- Helped to improve your professional practice. Helped produce even better outcomes for your clients.

HPC Standards for CPD The fifth standard requires registrants to be prepared to “present a written profile containing evidence of your CPD upon request which must be your own work”. Assume that you will be chosen for a CPD audit in a few months time!

Being Prepared and Not Scared! The HPC provides a template for a CPD Profile which has four sections to it:- Your profession and personal CPD Number. Personal Statement (max 1500 words) – describes how you have met each of the first four CPD standards with 5 or 6 examples of varied CPD activities which have improved your practice and benefited your clients.

Being Prepared and Not Scared! BSHAA has written a sample CPD Profile for a practising Hearing Aid Dispenser. Can be viewed or downloaded from the BSHAA website under ‘Help’ then ‘CPD Resources’. Select ‘Sample submission’. Also available on the HPC website.
