Trick 1: Clue Words

The bad news just seemed to keep pouring in The bad news just seemed to keep pouring in. These abject circumstances were extremely difficult for Kara.

Be able write down whether the word is positive, negative, or neutral. Goal for trick 1: Be able write down whether the word is positive, negative, or neutral.

Trick 2: Parts of Speech

Goal for trick 2: Be able to write down whether the word is a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or other part of speech

Trick 3: Roots and Affixes

Maladroit

Maladroit Malady, malicious, dismal, malign, malevolent, malice, malcontent, malaria, Maleficent.

Goal for trick 3: Be able to make a list of words that you know that contain the same root or affix as the word you are trying to figure out. See if you can figure out a pattern to see what the root or affix means.

Trick 4: Trigger Words

At first, I thought she was fairly friendly; however, when I got to know her better, I found out she was usually contentious.

Goal for trick 4: Be able to write whether the part of the sentence your word appears in agrees, contradicts, adds to, causes, or is a cause of the rest of the sentence.

Trick 5: Context

Goal for trick 5: Be able to write down any other details you learned from the rest of the sentence.

Trick 6: Synonyms

Goal for trick 6: Be able to substitute a synonym for your word Hint: The synonym will probably be a part of the definition.
