Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich Nazism & Fascism Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich

Fascism A modern political movement that promotes an extreme form of nationalism. It denies individual rights. One party rule under a dictator.

Nationalism A belief in loyalty to ones nation or country. To a people who you share a common history, language, ethnicity and culture. Instead of loyalty to a King or Monarch.

Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I and was unjust to Germany. They had lost the war and had to pay a huge war debt. Germany went into a massive depression & people became desperate….

Adolf Hitler Hitler was born in Austria and served in World War I. He later joined the National Socialist German Workers Party of the Nazi Party. They attempted to overthrow the government in 1923 in the Beer Hall Putsch. It failed & he was imprisoned.

He was also an artist.

Mein Kampf In prison, Hitler wrote a book called “Mein Kampf” or My Struggle. It described his ideas of racism and of a “master race.” He wished to destroy inferior races & peoples that included Jews, Slavs, homosexuals, Gypsies and blacks.

The Nazi Party Takes Control Hitler was a charismatic and outstanding speaker. He got the people of Germany to believe all their problems came from Versailles and inferiors races. He promised to return Germany to greatness.

Totalitarian States One party control of society and the government. Complete authority. No individuality. No political or individual freedoms. Communist in Russia. Nazi Party in Germany. Fascists in Italy.

The Third Reich Hitler said his empire would rule for 1,000 years. Hitler soon invaded Austria , Poland, Belgium and France. They all fell to Hitler’s Blitzkrieg or lightening war.

The Holocaust & Genocide

Genocide Genocide is the systematic killing of an entire people. Adolf Hitler will try and kill every Jew in Europe between 1933 to 1945. He called it the “Final Solution”.

Anti-Semitism Jews were forced to wear stars identifying themselves. Eventually they were round up and all their possessions taken. They were put on trains and sent to concentration camps throughout Europe.

Concentration Camps Also known as death camps. Auschwitz, Dachau and Treblinka were factories of death. Hitler’s elite SS squad ran the camps (the SS were his secret police unit, which he used to control Germany).

Murder Victims were told they were going to shower. They were then gassed with cyanide. Their bodies were then burned by the million.

Death Toll 10 Million people were murdered during the Holocaust. 6.5 million Jews. 3.5 million Gypsies, Slavs, Communist, homosexuals, Czechs, Catholic priests and blacks.

Holocaust Dead That is Ralph Wilson Stadium filled to capacity 133 times.

BAVPA That is 555 people for every person at the HSBC Arena. 11, 112 people for each person in this school today. 333,333 people for everyone in your history class.
