History During the late 18th and early 19th centuries there was an Industrial Revolution in Britain.Coal was used to fuel it and towns and cities grew in size and importance around the coalfields of the Midlands and the North. The invention of spinning machines led to a thriving textile industry. It was centred in Yorkshire and Lancashire. The steel and shipbuilding industries followed and by the early years of the 20the century the Midlands, the North of England, South Wales and the lowlands of Scotland were heavily industrialized.
