Cleaning Pollution

Thermal Pollution 1. When excessive amounts of heat are added to a body of water.

2. Occurs when power plants and other industries located near rivers use water in their cooling systems. 3. Can cause massive fish kills because discharged water is too warm for fish to tolerate.

4. This is because warmer water can not hold as much oxygen as colder.

Cleaning up Water Pollution In 1972 congress passed the Clean Water Act (CWA) 2. The purpose of the act was to “restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's water.”

3. The goal was to make all surface waters clean enough for fishing and swimming.
