My Story Nurse and Health Coach The dreaded APOE4 Enough One choice at a time

I was sick of being sick and feared getting dementia. I decided to do something about it. You can too!

Alzheimer’s Statistics Over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. By 2050 it could be 16 million. It is the 6th leading cause of death. It kills more people than breast and prostate cancer combined. 1 in 3 seniors die from dementia Dementia is from two Latin words, de mentis meaning “out of one’s mind.”

Alzheimer’s Statistics Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia, the most common, about 70% of all dementias. Synapses gone haywire. There is a gradual decline in brain function. Small decreases in brain function causes major changes in overall function. Studies show that if people have hormonal problems increase in risk is high

What Does Alzheimer's look like? A gradual decline in brain function Difficulty managing personal finances (paying bills) Wandering or getting lost Changes in sleep patterns Feeling moody, withdrawn, or detached Forgetfulness about one's own personal history Continuously repeating stories

What Lifestyle Choices Lead to Poor Brain Health Too many trans fats To much high fructose corn syrup Diet Obesity is major contributor Not addressing gut health Lack of sleep (less than 6 hrs a night) Depression 2-3 x Hormone steep decline and stress hormone increase

11 Step Action Plan Make sure your prescription drugs aren’t affecting your mind. a. Statins (interfere with mitochondrial in the cells) b. Acid reflux drugs (interfere with clean up of brain) c. Antihistamines and antidepressants (interfere with Acetylcholine (important neurotransmitter) Get Plenty of Sleep Control Your Blood Sugar(Alzheimer’s is called Diabetes III even a small increase greatly affects risk of Alzheimer’s)

11 Step Action Plan Normalize Blood Pressure Consider Gluten A Possible Source of Cognitive Problems (a destructive protein that irritates the immune system leading the immune system to attack the body including the brain.) Eat Foods that Support Brain Health (Olive oil and nuts, coconut oil, citrus fruit, fish like salmon, sardines and anchovies, chocolate, berries, apple with the peel, beetjuice and much more)

11 Step Action Plan Get Your Vision Checked Exercise Your Body Exercise Your Mind (Learn new things all the time) Seek Treatment for Depression Reduce Stress in Your Life

The Natural Approach to Fighting Dementia Look at the entire person. Analyze nutritional status/diet. Check thyroid status. Fight inflammation: inflammation is the root cause of Alzheimer's and other conditions like diabetes, obesity, heart disease.

The Natural Approach to Fighting Dementia Strengthen social Support: People in their lives: Support mechanism Check vitamin status Eliminate toxins in the environment Check for Lyme disease.

The Natural Approach to Fighting Dementia Vitamin D levels Vitamin B12/folic acid Overload of sugar Red blood cell mineral levels

The Natural Approach to Fighting Dementia Estradiol to progesterone ratio 100 parameters are assessed both historically, imaging- wise, and biochemically and genetically to identify the specific determinant, specific drivers of the underlying Alzheimer's process. Health coaches are going to be very important factor in therapy; help each person to do the optimal activity. TEAM approach by Dr. Vincent Fortanasce

The Natural Approach to Fighting Dementia Along with a regular family doctor you need a specialist in anti-aging metabolic medicine. Address gut health Numerous natural supplements that work on the brain in many different ways.

The Natural Approach to Fighting Dementia Laugh at yourself and don’t take things so seriously. Be mindful of your negative thoughts and find new ways to think that are more productive and positive. This are just some of the things one can do. There is much more.

Brain Health Starter Ideas Find Functional/Integrative Doctor who is trained in anti-aging medicine. Educate yourself. Take Vitamin D, Fish Oil and Probiotics. Add coconut oil, avocados, less grains and more vegetables and lean meats to your diet. Use a Health Coach to guide through each step.

I GET IT I still have days I am tired. I still have days I am discouraged. I have had migraine headaches for 53 years and have not found a permanent solution. I still have days I make poor choices around food. I still hate to exercise but this is what I am working on now.

A Good Example Before Taking Responsibility

Proviso What I Am Not Saying What I am Saying That every sickness can be prevented. That any illness you have is something to be guilty about. If someone has dementia they will always get better when healthy choices are implemented. Life still happens even with our best efforts There is a higher probability of health with prevention Preventable diseases are better managed with consistent good lifestyle choices Choices are in your hands and your responsibility.

Conclusion No one can make you healthy. Only you can decide to take the steps to regain the health you desire, one step at a time. My desire for everyone is to fight for health so that the part of your life that really matters is filled with energy, joy and peace in the good and the hard times. The key to this possibility is your personal decision. Choose prevention no matter what stage of life you are in.
