Q1-Q2, Q2-Q3 Interconnect Zone Disconnection Q1 Magnet Extraction Address an overall sequence of activities required for a Q1 magnet removal Together, where available, with an estimate of resources needed to complete them “Clean” removal leaving the zone immediately ready for the replacement magnet IP-Q1 disconnection is not covered here We illustrate a sequence with the case of the Q1 Triplet magnet Where we believe Q3 does not need to be moved (to be verified). Particular case involving the most special machinery at multiple stages –for disconnection at the Interconnect zones and in particular for extraction One of the most activated LHC magnets; a condition that will have major influence on the methods used and resources required

Interconnect zones IP-Q1, Q1-Q2 and Q2-Q3 Have rarely (or never) been disconnected but documented estimates exist for: Ouverture de l’Iinterconnexion Q1-Q2: EDMS 830013 Ouverture de l’Interconnexion Q2-Q3: EDMS 818103 Recently compiled: Procedure for Removing the LHC Triplets in LSS1, LSS2, LSS5 & LSS8: EDMS 1409757 For the interconnect assembly some detailed FNAL documents exist: Q1-IP Interconnect procedure 5520-OP-333726 Q1-Q2 Interconnect procedure 5520-OP-333765 Q2-Q3 With TAS Interconnect procedure 5520-OP-333801 Q2-Q3 Without TAS Interconnect procedure 5520-OP-333812 Q3-DFBX Interconnect procedure 5520-OP-333802 Some drawings (paper/pdf format) for interconnection Q1-IP, Q1-Q2, Q2-Q3, Q3-DFBX It is assumed that disconnection ~= inverse of connection

Main assembly QI Q2 Disconnection activities here can be carried out with some simple fixtures and relatively common hand tools as detailed in EDMS 830013 and EDMS 818103

Piping Connections Separation of tubing at flanged interfaces requires specific automatic orbital cutting machines

Q1 to Q2 Splice and Spool connections Consolidation?

Comments specific to the LHC triplet Interconnect Zones The LHC triplet IC zones have rarely been completely disconnected The layout of the triplet IC zones is substantially different to that of the LHC arc IC zones. Investment in automatic orbital welding and cutting equipment was not done specifically for the (relatively small) population of LHC triplet interconnect zones During first assembly, manual welders were employed to make all the piping connections in the triplet IC zones We do not have orbital S-Steel tube cutting equipment dedicated specifically to the LHC triplets Some orbital stainless steel tube cutting equipment that we have may be modified to be useable; needs to be checked (flange diameter and space envelope) in detail case by case Where not useable, other acceptable tube cutting methods will be needed

Triplet Magnet Extraction from IP Has rarely been done Machinery and procedures exist and have been used very successfully for the first triplet magnet installation(s) (non activated state) The process requires close human supervision/intervention Extraction sequence is assumed to be ~= inverse of installation

Triplet Installation/Extraction The extraction procedure we have today Essentially the inverse of the procedures detailed in EDMS 722396 More than 150 discrete work steps are involved 324 Man-hours to complete The initial installation of Q1 and Q2 was achieved through a 14 sequence specific procedure as detailed in EDMS 722396 above Equipment and manpower intensive Space is tight, forcing manpower into close proximity Courtesy Kurt Artoos
