Passing the Baton 2 Timothy 1:3-5

3 I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, 4 longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. 5 For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.

Thankful to Serve “I thank God whom I serve…” If you think about it, you will thank God. 1 Timothy 1:12

Clear Conscience “I serve God with a clear conscience, the way my forefathers did…” Why mention a clear conscience and forefathers? Acts 22:3 – “Educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the law of our fathers” Acts 23:1 – “Lived my life with a perfectly good conscience” Acts 24:14 – “I do serve the God of our fathers” Acts 24:16 – “…do my best to maintain always a blameless conscience” Acts 26:4-6 – “…Pharisee… our fathers.”

“As I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day…” Many are praying for us. Are we praying for many? Why revival? Answered prayers 2 Corinthians 12:9

Relationship Paul gives thanks for Timothy. He brings memories of Timothy into focus. He longs for Timothy. He was heavily invested in Timothy. I want to have that heart. – John Vanderhorst

A Different Side of Paul “Longing to see you” “Even as I recall your tears” “So that I may be filled with joy” This is discipling in the context of relationship. Acts 20:19; Philippians 3:18 2 Corinthians 2:4 – “…I wrote to you with many tears… that you might know the love I have especially for you.”

Sincere Faith “For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.” How could Paul say this with such certainty? Timothy X26 in NT from Acts 16:1–Hebrews 13:23 Philippians 2:20-22

Summary PRAY Michael’s card Applications: (Let the Holy Spirit speak to you.) Weep with those who weep. This means you’re involved in lives. Come alongside. PRAY Clear conscience Discipling in the context of relationship. (Email)
