Pronounced [piythagoras] Pythagoras Pronounced [piythagoras] When was he born? And where? Has he died? If so, when? Where does/did he live? What is/was his importance in Algebra or Geometry? How did he become involved in Math?

When was he born? And where? Pythagoras was born in the 6th century BC. He was born in Samos, Greece.

Where is Samos? Map of Greece Samos is the easternmost of the Aegean Islands of Greece.

Has he died? If so, when? Since groups like his were often sworn to secrecy, much is not known about the later half of his life. There is evidence which some believe proves Pythagoras lived to be between 60 and 100 years old. But there is still little known about how he died or where he died. More than one source says he was killed in a fire when his school was set on fire.

Where did he live? He lived in Crotona, South Italy, where he founded a set of beliefs known as Pythagoreanism. Because of his moral and religious beliefs, he had to flee the area. He then lived in Megapontum in Lucania.

What is/was his importance in Algebra or Geometry? He his commonly known for the Pythagorean Theorem. However, it is believed that the members of his school, which specialized in math and science, discovered the theorem and named it in honor of him. Pythagoras’ most important contribution to math was his implementation of proofs. His works are believed to have influenced the works of Plato, another great mathematician.
