Introduction Career choice is grounded in the cultural value system of the United States. Career services receive valuable feedback from stakeholders. Career services’ approach is changing to meet the needs of a diverse student population. A four year process model encourages students to use their talents to the fullest.

Key Historical Events 1892 – University of Nebraska, 1907 – Teachers College, 1919 Yale University Early 1900’s Gilded Age/Progressive Movement Frank Parson –Vocation Bureau and Choosing a Vocation WWI – Army Alpha General Classification Test WWII – Vocational Rehabilitation and Educational Counseling Program; Veteran’s Administration 1950’s Industrialization led to college recruiting programs. 1960’s – Civil Rights, Vietnam and activism – focus on linking education/employment. Qualifications Master’s degree in student personnel administration, counseling, psychology, business or education. Experience in career counseling/placement advising skills, teaching, presentation, facilitation skills and technological literacy. New professionals advised to have counseling certification and licensure. Knowledge of occupational trends, career information systems and resources, program design and evaluation and process consultation are helpful skills.
