Do Now: Take out notebook and pencil Start a New Do Now page At top of page write Do Nows for week of 3/5 What do you think are the different roles organisms play in an ecosystem?

Engage Video

Glue notes onto page

Levels of Organization in an Ecosystem Organism- an individual form of life or species of living thing, only one Ex: one elephant

Levels of Organization in an Ecosystem Populations- all of the SAME organisms of one species in an area Ex: a group of elephants

Community- All of the different populations of different species living in an area Ex: elephants living with zebras, giraffes, etc.

Ecosystem- all of the living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) parts in an area Ex: elephants, giraffes, grass, trees, water, oxygen, etc.

Factors of an Ecosystem Biotic factors- living or once living organisms Ex: animals, plants, fungi, bacteria

Abiotic factors- non-living parts in an ecosystem Ex: water, air, soil, sunlight, temp

With a partner quickly do the following… In your notebook make a T chart and list biotic and abiotic factors you see in the picture

Organism’s Role in Ecosystem Producer- makes their own food using energy from the sun (plants) Consumer- gets energy from eating other organisms Third role which will be talked about next week (decomposer)

Organism’s Relationships in an Ecosystem Predator-Prey- when one organism eats another organism Predator- the organism that hunts down and eats prey Ex: cheetah Prey- the organism that is hunted down and eaten Ex: deer One organism benefits and the other is harmed Cheetah Deer

Competition- when two organisms, same species or different, fights over the same resource Ex: 2 hartebeest fighting over territory One will win and benefit and the other will lose and be negatively effected

Symbiotic Relationships Mutualism- a relationship where both organisms benefit, win/win, +/+ Ex: bee getting nectar from flower and spreading pollen, oxpecker eating insects off of antelope

Commensalism- when one organism benefits and the other is neither helped nor harmed, win/neutral, +/0 Ex: Remora fish swimming with sharks, bird nest

Parasitism- when one organism lives in or on another organism harming it Parasite- organism that feeds on another organism Host- organism that is harmed by the parasite Win/Lose, +/- Ex: ticks, mosquitos

Orchids growing high on tree limbs

Commensalism- because the orchids get extra sunlight to grow and the tree is not bothered

Octopus and Crab Video

Predation- because the octopus is catching, killing, and consuming the crab

Tapeworm in Fish

Parasitism- because tapeworm is benefitting by feeding on nutrients from fish and fish is harmed because it is losing nutrients

Vulture vs. Cheetah

Competition- because the vulture is taking the food from the cheetah limiting its resource of food What about between the different vultures?

Clownfish feeding on small organisms that may cause harm to anemone and anemone gives clownfish a safe place to live.

Mutualism- because both organisms are getting something out of the relationship
