Line

Line: is an element of art that is the path of a moving point through space. Outline: a line that shows or creates the outer edges of a shape. Implied Lines: a series of points that the viewer’s eyes automatically connect. Examples: wet footprints

5 basic kinds of lines: Vertical Horizontal Diagonal Zigzag Curved

Vertical lines move up and down—they do not lean at all Horizontal lines are parallel to the horizon—they do not slant Diagonal lines slant—they are between vertical and horizontal Zigzag are made from a combination of diagonal lines—they form angles and change direction suddenly. Curved change direction gradually.

Length—lines can be short or long Width—lines can be thick or thin Line Variations Length—lines can be short or long Width—lines can be thick or thin Texture—lines can be rough or smooth Direction—lines can move in any direction Degree of curve—lines can curve gradually or not at all, become wavy of form spirals.

Contour line: defines the edges and surface ridges of an object. More terms to know Contour line: defines the edges and surface ridges of an object. Gesture: an expressive movement—purpose of the drawing is to capture the feeling of motion. Calligraphy: beautiful handwriting. Used in China and Japan to form the characters that represent the language.

Expressive qualities of line Vertical lines are static or inactive. They appear to be at rest. They express stability. Artists use them to show dignity, poise, stiffness and formality. Horizontal lines are also static. They express feelings of peace, rest, quiet, and stability. Give a feeling of permanence and make you feel content, relaxed and calm

Curved are always graceful Curved are always graceful. They change direction so they express activity. Often used in decorative arts to suggest a feeling of luxury Diagonal lines express instability, tension, activity and excitement. Zigzag lines create confusion; are extremely active and evoke feelings of excitement.

Hatching: Using a series of parallel lines to shade an object Hatching: Using a series of parallel lines to shade an object. Used especially with ink media. Cross-hatching: Shading using a series of intersecting parallel lines.
