Overview of Graphic Communications

Graphic Communications

The exchange of information in visual form using, words, drawings, photographs and a combination of these is called?

Editing

The final preparation of the author’s or writer’s manuscript for publication is called?

Photo Conversion

Uses light to place the original image onto a light-sensitive material, what is it?

The Printing Processes

Relief Printing

The oldest Printing Method is Called?

The two Relief printing methods?

Letterpress and Flexography

LetterPress

This printing process uses raised Metal plates or individual letters and is seldom used today except as a hobby.

Flexography

This printing process uses a flexible plastic or synthetic plate with a relief or raised image to print on a substrate

Printing

Uses a specialized machine to transfer an image from an image carrier to a substrate, usually paper is called?

Offset Printing/Lithography

-Based on the concept oil and water do not mix -Based on the concept oil and water do not mix. -Image areas of the printing plate accept ink and repel water; nonimage areas accept water.

Gravure Printing

-The image area is sunken into the image carrier

Screen Printing

-A stencil process, in which an image carrier is attached to a screen and ink is forced through the open mesh areas.

Imapactless Printing

-Does not require direct contact between an image carrier and the substrate. -Inkjet printers and photocopiers are examples of impactless printing

Binding and Finishing

Binding

-The process of joining together multiple pages of a printed product by various means including: -sewing -Stapling -spiral wire -adhesives

-Folding-required when a large sheet contains two or more pages of a product -Scoring-the creasing of a heavier sheet of paper to assist in folding

-Collating-the process of placing pages in the right sequence -Stitching-is a stapling process -Trimming-the cutting of material after printing to produce even edges

Finishing

-Various processes that enhance the final printed product The most common are: -Embossing -Die-Cutting -Stamping -Lamination

Embossing-Produces a raised design on paper or other material Embossing-Produces a raised design on paper or other material. Die-Cutting-Uses blades to cut paper or other materials into irregular designs.

Stamping-Applying a metal foil to almost any type of material, such as leather, paper, or cloth. Lamination-the process of bonding plastic film, by heat and pressure, to a sheet of paper to protect its surface an improve appearance.

Segments of the Industry

~Commercial Printing ~Periodical Printing ~Newspaper Printing ~Book Publishing and Printing ~In-Plant Printing
